All 22 at Washington Passing Game

Post by Nobody »

I have a pretty good idea of what happened already based on multiple reviews of the Condensed tape and just extrapolating, but I'm going to look at the All 22 to confirm.

Here is what I'm extremely confident of at this point:

1) Darden's mishandling of an easy Hitch was massive. We have way too high Drop % this year and particularly drops that are enormously costly (volleyball setting them into picks or dropping big plays to stay ahead of schedule or big plays down the field).

2) The second Pick looks to be a little bit of a Mike and Brady not on the same page on the angle of his Over route + a poor throw + no vertical route taking away the deep half Safety on that side. We're seeing that too much against 2 Deep right now (Over routes without a concept to take the top off).

3) The iOL was the worst I've seen it in the last few years except for last year against the Saints (I think it was?) when Marpet was out. Absolute train wreck. Marpet and Cappa were beaten several times and beaten badly. 7 Pressures given up by the iOL and several of them were play-crippling. That creates a feedback loop for the QB's internal ticker. You cannot win football games in any offense with that kind of interior Pressure given up and you particularly can't do it in a vertical offense that hasn't adjusted to the huge amount of 2 Deep Shell coverage it is seeing.

4) The propensity of checkdowns I'm confident were due to (3) above + gameplanning and play-calling just not adjusting to the huge amount of 2 Man Under and 2 Zone we're seeing. This has been Leftwich's opportunity to step up and he has not done it. Perimeter Screens are not the answer.

Interestingly enough, if these guys are going to play this kind of Shell coverage against us, we're going to have to go the anti-EPA route and just maul them up front. Even if its just a single drive where we just do what the Pats did in the past; Run > Run > Run > Run. Just crush them up front. Take them out of that 12-15 yard off 2 Deep we're seeing.

Then you can go back to your normal offense. But you have to adjust. Flood 2 Zone, multiple verts on one side of the field against 2 Man, run the ball aggressively, play-action max protect, get your best players on their # 3 coverage player and give them an exchanged release/rub and attack the lost leverage. Just do it over and over again.

It feels like we're just "eff it...we're gonna do what we do." We see how that has worked out for the Chiefs (who are only now responding) and we're starting to see how that is working out for us. Football is chess, not checkers. Attack what they're doing to you. Dictate. Don't call plays right into the teeth of their concepts and just say "get it done."

++++++++++++++++++

Finally, this Brady hate is ridiculous. We have the best QB in the league on our team right now. In every meaningful category, he is dominating the league right now. He's the best DYAR QB, best graded QB, lowest % of Turnover-Worthy Plays, 4th highest % of Big Time Throws, he's 1st in Sack % because (as always) he's getting rid of the ball at a ridiculously high % despite being in a top 5 vert offense in the league (to protect his OL from Sacks/Pressures and his offense from negative plays), he's 1st in Yards/Game, 3rd in QBR, 4th in Passer Rating.

Its embarrassing to see fellow Bucs fans complain about Tom Brady like we have a QB problem on this team while we literally have the # 1 MVP candidate playing QB for us and.

Its simple. We're getting outcoached on both sides of the ball; out-schemed and out-adjusted. We're making dumb decisions (why the hell are we not deferring to the 2nd half?). We're having Penalties at a brutal clip and in key, gamestate-crippling situation. We're insistent on playing JPP over JTS when JPP is struggling terribly on a snap-in and snap-out basis (the guy needs to sit down and try to get that shoulder/hand right if he can...his tape is showing a player that is utterly ineffectively on the overwhelming % of snaps). We've had a spate of injuries in the Defensive Backfield and lost 2 of our most important Eligibles for a large amount of time. We're blitzing way too much and not only are we getting nothing out of it, but teams are seeing it routinely and replacing the blitzer with receivers (this screams that our blitz packages have been figured out); can we just drop 7 and play 2 Man Under and double guys like we did in the Super Bowl (and like the best pass defenses have been doing)? Blitz now and again to mix it up...the Blitz is not working and its killing us.

Anyway, I'll get some tape analysis up when it drops tomorrow.

It’ll as if our team completely forgot about the playoff game. Washington played the same defensive looks and concepts in that game and what did we do to adjust? Ran, ran, ran, ran. Ran 29 times for 142. When they got out of the shell looks, we got big plays over the top. Washington didn’t sway much from that game plan at all.

When we get away from running the ball, this is a much easier offense to defend. The major difference between this game and the playoff game? Turnovers. WFT got early turnovers Sunday and got points off of them. As a result we abandoned our run game and they had no reason to get out of their shell looks. Checkdown Tom was in full force.

We get AB back and the offense will be fine. He’s a major difference maker.

I believe we are 5-0 with him and 1-3 without.

That and horrific defense on 1st and 2nd down. They were in 3rd and 1 to 5 all night long. When you're in 3rd and short all night long you're going to convert nearly 70 % and you're going to sustain the longest drive in the NFL 2021 in the most crucial moment (as an answer to complete momentum loss).

13 Missed Tackles! 13!

JPP 1 Pressure in 31 Snaps! 3.3 % Win Rate against almost exclusively single teams! And he's constantly losing contain on pocket escapes his side!

Great post, Nobody. It's amazing watching some folks around here acting like Brady is the problem.

@Nobody You just explained a dink and dunk game where they exploited us at will. They contested everything we did with rushing four, did our four do anything with out the blitz, not much and they dinked their way down the field. Perfectly happy to control the clock and take a field goal or a TD. They lose one of their best defensive linemen and didnt skip a beat, they lost an o-linemen and didnt skip a beat.

Take a team that has to play 60 minutes and we lost.

o-line - Skins
d-line - Skins
RB - Skins
LB's - Skins
DB's - Skins
? - ? Skins
Coaching - Skins

NFL.com credited Wash with one QH from Jonathan Allen, we had 8.
TFLs Tampa 11 and Skins 0
Sacks 5 to 0
Keep in mind when Chase Young went down they were without both of their starting DE's.

They scored on 6 of their 9 possessions and we scored on 4 of 10.

The NFL and all the non-Buc fans watched a magical game where a so called bad performing team destroyed a Super Bowl Champion.

Great post @Nobody, I believe point #3 about the interior Oline can't be overstated. I just commented about it somewhere but they've had two bad games in a row with last Sunday being the worst, no surprise Brady has not had the best performances as a result.

I also agree that the Bucs offense has fallen too much in love with it's passing game to the point our stubbornness (lack of adjustments) is becoming a detriment due to how defenses have adjusted. The Chiefs comparison is very apt imo.

Opposing teams will continue to copy what the Saints and WFT did with playing 7 defenders in coverage w/ a 2-high shell forcing the Bucs throw short and run the ball.

With the Giants coming to town on MNF they have two beasts up front in Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence, so our Oline will have another tough test.

Johnathan Allen and Daron Payne were already having great seasons and that continued Sunday. Marpet was lucky he only got called for 1 holding penalty because he looked helpless out there.

What's interesting to me is I see why Donovan Smith is getting so much praise this season. Granted I have no idea of the EDGE rushers names he guarded after Young blew his knee but I thought he was excellent on Sunday.

I'm always wary of fans being super coaches, talking about who should be starting over who, and what concepts - or even sequences of plays - a team should be running.

But @Nobody's not wrong, about anything said up there. This may sound overly simplistic, but we look like a team that just brought everybody back then trotted them out there to try to do the same things no matter what. I don't see creativity or adaptation (outside of forced changes due to injuries), it's just rolling our logo out there and going for it. Lucky for us we're talented enough that it works more often than not, but I hope they show me something between now and the end of the season because, assuming we get in, that's a bad post-season recipe.

I kinda wish to know who it was that commited 13 missed tackles and who it was that was credited with 7 QB pressures that NFL.com's pdf file refuses to acknowledge.

That little bit of added info would do nice...

We get away from the run way too early. We get our nose bloody and become one-dimensional. It's been a problem under Arians/Lefty forever. They never seem comfortable running from behind. Thankfully we don't spend a ton of our season playing from behind, at least by more than a score. But when we are, we go Mike Martz. There have been several times during the last few years when we still have plenty of time to work with in the game, but instead of ripping off chunks of running yards against light boxes, we're dropping back every snap.

As for the blitzing, I've just come to accept that this is what Bowles does, even when it's not working. The good news is once our corners return and QBs have to hold the ball a tic later, our pass rush will be getting home more often.

So the Saints and the Skins were Zac and we were the ex-girlfriend?

Reviewed the tape but I've been sick so haven't had the energy/will to put words/gifs out there. I'll get some crap up later tonight.

Alirght, first drive; the missed 3rd and 8. This is actually a great look into why it can be extremely difficult to watch the live game and not know who is at fault here. How many people thought that Brady missed here, raise your hands?

chrome-capture (1).gif
This is one of the most freaky QB throws you'll ever see. This is the kind of throw only a handful of QBs in NFL history make; immediate B gap pressure so you have to get the ball out asap. Throw the guy open on a 12 yard Out and it misses.

Why does it miss?

I love TJ. Great ball skills. Competes for the football. Aggressive at the catch window and tracks the ball beautifully on verts.

However, this is where he struggles (precision in route running, setting guys up, and explosiveness in and out of cuts). Look at how labored, imprecise, and inefficient (a hair's worth of drift upfield) he is at the top of this route. That is what causes this incompletion. A proper NFL route and this is absolutely on the money, completed, drive still going, despite the instant B gap pressure due to Marpet's loss to a quick Slab > Arm Over.

The NFL is a game of absolute precision. TJ can improve his explosiveness a bit but not a ton. But he can absolutely improve his route running efficiency and precision (this isn't the only snap like this on the tape where TJ's route running wasn't up to par and it cost what should have been a play win).

Here is the Pick that is on Brady.

They're running a 3 Zone Blitz and he clearly just misreads it. But once again, Marpet loses badly and that speeds up the play. Marpet doesn't loose badly, he probably comes off of this High Read and checks it down to the Low Read (Fournette on the Arrow Sit route) for a healthy gain.

Coverage misread + too much interior Pressure already on your QB + another big pressure from B to B = Int.

chrome-capture (3).gif

We're 3 drives in and its an absolute mess offensively. The iOL is getting crushed. Darden derps a Hitch that should have gone for 6-7 into a short field Pick. Guys are running poor routes. Guys are committing penalties. Now your QB's cognitive space is screwed up and he throws a pick when pressured on 1st and 10.

Embarrassing start (to say the least) for coming off of a Bye week.

This one is on Brady. Should have been 6.

After a 1st down run in RZ Tight nets 1, its 2nd down. I don't know why we're in 12 personnel here. Makes very little sense if we aren't going play-action (we don't).

They play 2 Man again. Once again the iOL gives up big pressure and a hit.

chrome-capture (4).gif

However, for some reason Brady prioritizes the concept to his left w/ Brate in short motion to condense the formation. We've got Howard on the Shallow Cross there (which gives eye candy to the Safety to vacate so we can get Mike on the Over) w/ Brate pushing hard outside then back to the Post and Gio on a Wheel > Stop.

Neither the coverage nor the leverage supports Brady prioritizing that. On his right we've got Mike and Godwin in a Stack. OJ's Cross pulls the Safety (by design) and Mike just runs a fantastic route here with a great push outside to screw up the integrity of both of the DB's coverage with that leverage-challenge and then back to the Post. His Post is wide open as is Godwin's Curl under it.

This is entirely on Brady. The play won big time. It was easy 6 to Mike (and probably 6 to Godwin).

You don't want to think it with Brady, but this looks like a payer On Tilt after the meltdown that is happening around him. This should have been stealing 6 and making it 13-7, but instead we only get 3.

++++++++++++

On the final play of the drive Gio is following Mike's hard push inside and Slant with an Arrow. If he catches it, he has a chance to break a tackle and score. But of course it just doinks off of his chest.

Clown shoes and spinning bowties. This is a team prepared for football?

First drive of the 2nd half. We're 3rd and 2 and we need points here. 3 at least makes it 1 score.

chrome-capture (5).gif

They go Cover 1 Man Blitz w/ a Green Dog and our protection up front is a train wreck (despite Gio staying in). Jensen turns the 1T completely loose (!) to pick up the LB? Immediate A Gap Pressure.

Brady has a Mesh w/ Brate/Godwin and he's going to Brate. They could have easily called Defensive Holding against Brate's route here as there is clearly a grab to try to stay in-phase when the CB loses inside leverage. That little grab could have easily been enough to slow Brate down a hair here. It looks like it prevented him from getting his back shoulder free so he could at least dive and go after it. Either way, not called.

So protection gaffe completely turning the 1T loose and a non-call that could have easily gone our way here.

Another punt.

At this point, its the defense's turn to let the team down as we score to make it a 3 point game and score 2 times out of our next 3 possessions.

But, as we know, outside of LVD's Forced Fumble, the defense lets WFT answer both scores by the offense and (in the doing) gives up an NFL ''21 tops drive length with nearly the entire 4th Q getting eaten up.

Here is why the offensive drive stalled between those two TD drives. We overcome a big OH Holding call (on Marpet...one of his worst games of his career) with a big Brady to Godwin connection. Here is where it stalls out.

chrome-capture (7).gif

After a play win on 1st down (4 yard run), its 2nd and 6 at midfield. We come out 11P w/ Brate and then motion Fournette to Empty and we're running a Tunnel Screen to Godwin up top. This was a winning play call and could have been a nice chunk. This is 100 % on Fournette. Instead of continuing hard to the sideline, tracking his man and burying him, he breaks down, gets outleveraged and lets his man make the Stop at the LoS.

Can't happen. This is not a detail-oriented team right now. This is a detail-IDGaF team right now. Single assignment losses (particularly of this magnitude...turning what could have been a Godwin catch-and-run for 4+) trigger play losses in the NFL regardless of which side of the ball you're on.

And on 3rd down he's got Mike 1v1 up top of the screen as they're blitzing and playing 3 Zone behind it.

chrome-capture (9).gif

Mike is running a Deep Curl and we've got Gio on a Chip + Out underneath it.

The CB is in Off coverage and does a great job anticipating (some might say this is Illegal Contact here, but I would hate that call here and I don't think it should be called in this situation...CB does a good job here). If this was a vert? Its 6. Defender is sitting on the Curl at that distance (this could be film study/tendencies on tape for this down and distance + formation (Mike's route tree in this offense isn't exactly enormously dynamic!). But its the Deep Curl and the Off 3 Zone CB is sitting on it.

Right when the ball should come out, the defender is in perfect defending position. Brady has to reset and the Pressure forces a pocket escape left and Brady isn't beating anyone pocket escaping left.

After this Punt its the Benny Hill theme drive that started at the beginning of the Cretaceous to seal the deal. Drop curtains. Fade to black. Cue the Clown Car.

ANATOMY OF A DISASTER

I wanted to break down the final drive to find out where the problems were from assignment losses to playcalling losses that created that masterpiece of unclutchitude. This is only covering the play losses themselves. Doing this right now (rather than taking notes and writing it up) in real time:

6 Yard Pass
(10:05) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke pass short right to J.McKissic to WAS 28 for 6 yards (P.Desir).
2nd & 8 at WAS 22

* Tampa 2 Zone Blitz (White). This was a winning call. It got White through C gab w/ RG stepping down to A gap so that set inside gives White huge advantage to burst through C > Rip > Corner > Finish. White can't corner and finish. This is something he has to get better on. He gets so many chances like this. He has to be able to come under control here, drop his hips, corner and finish. So often he comes clean or mostly clean, doesn't finish the play and now we're down a man in coverage on the backend (like this play) so its a throw to an uncovered checkdown and 6.

3 Yard Run
(9:23) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke scrambles left end pushed ob at WAS 31 for 3 yards (A.Winfield).
3rd & 2 at WAS 28

We bring all 3 iDL and both Edge out of base so its blitz + 1 Man behind. We're 5v5 as they leave no one in. Not a single man wins. All singles and no wins. They run a game w/ Vea and Gholston and it gets nothing done and the B gap left side is a gaping hole because of Barret's edge rush. Easy pocket escape and through left B for the 1st down.

I hate the fact that JPP is in and not JTS here (we need an explosive Edge player who can chase down/contain a running QB in this situation and he's flat out more capable rushing the passer than JPP right here). And then we have all of these guys lose in singles and the game gets nothing done.

Why not have JTS on the field, show a massive front with all gaps covered to confuse the OL and maybe bait an audible from run (if they're running) and have JTS Spy?

This defense and what we show up front does nothing to confuse the OL and it is the best possible defense for a pocket escape conversion on 3rd and 2 (against a QB who wants to do exactly that).

16 Yard Pass
(8:42) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke pass short right to T.McLaurin to WAS 47 for 16 yards (A.Winfield).
1st & 10 at WAS 31

The fake a Jet Sweep Lead one way and come back the other way with a Tunnel Screen to the Doubles side right into the teeth of our 2 Zone Cloud (the boundary CB is way off and bailing to 2 Deep). This is Bowles losing.

Then its compounded by JPP being horribly slow to read it (he was dropping to Flat) and taking himself entirely out of the play. Then White (who clicked and closed well on this one), who put himself in a good position to make a huge tackle here for maybe a 2 yard gain, just completely overruns it and takes himself out of the play. After that, its out the gate for 16 (Winfield is rotating the other way for deep half and everyone else is getting into their run fits play-side).

Bowles loses and JPP and White compound it.

4 Yard Run
(7:56) D.Carter left end pushed ob at TB 49 for 4 yards (A.Nelson; J.Dean). End around
1st & 10 at WAS 47

This is a tough one. You want to just chalk it up to them. We're playing Tampa 2 (so White is running Hole and won't be able to be a pursuit player) and they give us Jet Action one way, then fake the handoff to the RB that way and then go Endaround opposite the Jet Action. White has paused briefly for the fit and then he's bailing hard for his Deep Hole responsibility. Edwards is the uncovered overhang defender play side. If this is going to get blown up, he has to see it and get downhill and make the play or string it out. He doesn't. Also Anthony Nelson is play-side End. He doesn't see it and he doesn't generate a stalemate. If this was going to be 3 or less yards, its on those two guys. W/ the Jet Action, there is only a single Edwards' side. You can say that he needs to commit harder and/or see this, but he has Seam/Hook responsibility here (meaning if he comes to hard, a Slant or Hitch or Skinny Post is wide open).

Given all the circumstances, this is probably mostly on the Tampa 2 and the front situation w/ a lean toward Nelson being only Nelson and Edwards being in a bad catch-22.

7 Yard Run
(7:12) (Shotgun) A.Gibson left end to TB 42 for 7 yards (W.Gholston, L.David).
2nd & 6 at TB 49

They run an Outside Zone from Shotgun away from their motion to Trips (and then they show Bubble Screen there). White triple takes (fit the Outside Zone...WAIT...Bubble Screen...WAIT...Outside Zone) and that takes him entirely out of his run fit. LVD is enormously slow to read this and get into his fit. We don't have Vea in so Gholston is swallowed and he's playside iDL (loses to single). Suh is backside and is easily Reach blocked with help and then climb by uncovered OL on him. Nelson is still Nelson and he runs himself right out of the play.

This is mostly about Gholson, Nelson, LVD, and White (processing and closing and fitting the run and reading/winning against singles for the DL).

6 Yard Pass
(5:41) T.Heinicke pass short right to J.Bates to TB 33 for 6 yards (M.Edwards).
2nd & 7 at TB 39

They motion to 2x2 and fake an Outside Zone Toss behind that motion and boot the other way with Crossing + Over routes with the boot. LVD does a great job picking up his Over and the boot-side CB and S do a good job bracketing the Out route. Barrett is Curl/Hook here and he allows himself to get outflanked by the Shallow Cross from the other side. He has to match this. He actually takes it for a second but then backs off and tries to get depth (?). He basically has both the Boot and the Cross here so its pretty much a train-wreck (he takes neither). Regardless, if he picks up the Crossing route, Heinicke tucks it for probably the same yardage. This is Bowles play-call losing as much as anything.

2 Yard Run
(4:52) (Shotgun) A.Gibson right guard to TB 31 for 2 yards (V.Vea; D.White).
3rd & 1 at TB 33

This is simple Man run from balanced 12 right up A gap. Doubles on iDl except Vita. Vita is singled by the Center here. Singled. He doesn't win and its a 2 yard gain; a win in normal situations but not on 3rd and 1.

4 Yard Run
(4:10) (Shotgun) A.Gibson up the middle to TB 27 for 4 yards (J.Whitehead, L.David).
1st & 10 at TB 31

This is a hard rep to watch. Bowles' call straight up wins here. I see lack of effort/slowness/finish by multiple defenders here. They run Inside Zone and bring the TE under the formation to kick out the backside Edge. However, we're blitzing both Safeties off the Edge so the TE picks up the S instead of Barrett. Clean shot for an uncovered Barrett to make a big Run Stop. Broken tackle. Vea is hugely slow coming off the ball and actually gives up displacement to the RG (by himself). Suh and JPP are handled entirely. LVD apprently thinks the play is dead so he's basically standing around when it squirts out the other side his way (if he went hard down into his fit, this is a Stuff or a 1 yard gain...but he's just standing there). This is bad in a lot of ways and it looks like a defeated defense at this point.

If I would have seen all the varying aspects of this rep live at the time I would have booked them milking the rest of the 4 minutes and getting 6 to finish us.

5 Yard Pass
(3:18) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke pass short left to A.Humphries pushed ob at TB 20 for 5 yards (M.Edwards).
3rd & 4 at TB 25

Safety Blitz w/ 1 Man behind and White on Green Dog (his man stays in so he comes) They block it up with 7 and its Edwards 1v1 against Hump's Out route. Edwards is a great underneath Zone defender/box coverage player and a solid 2 Deep player...but he's only a solid to serviceable Man player. He gets outleverage to the sideline, ball is out quick and on the money, and its another 1st.

6 Yard Pass
(3:10) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke pass short left to A.Gibson to TB 15 for 6 yards (A.Winfield).
2nd & 11 at TB 21

You want to know what last week's Hands to the QB face penalty PTSD looks like? White is blitzing off the edge completely free. This is right into the teeth of the rubbed Quick Slant his side. He could trivially get his hands up and make this play to bat it down or make Heinicke pull it down and reset (possibly even force an escape or maybe get a Sack after that reset). White...free runner...in the Tunnel Screen passing lane...is a nothingburger. He doesn't try to get his hands up to deflect it/make a play. He just runs right through it with the ball whizzing past his ear. Gibson runs a great route. Winfield plays excellent Press Coverage and avoids the Rub mostly. He's in Gibson's pocket...can't make the play.

But this is definitely an artifact of White getting 15 yards last week for brushing the face mask of the QB. There is no way he shouldn't make this play. He HAS to make this play. He doesn't, Winfield can't generate the PBU; 6 yards and 3rd and Medium (and very convertable!).

6 Yard Pass
(3:05) (Shotgun) T.Heinicke pass short middle to T.McLaurin to TB 9 for 6 yards (J.Dean, J.Whitehead).
3rd & 5 at TB 15

1 Man Blitz w/ White Green Dog again. Dean loses quickly to the Slant, Heinicke just drifts back like he does and fires it with the clean window (due to the blitz). Whitehead obliterates McLaurin (someone is playing with control and fire). He holds on.

5 Yard Run
(2:19) (Shotgun) A.Gibson left tackle to TB 4 for 5 yards (D.White, A.Winfield).
1st & Goal at TB 96 Yard Pass

Inside Zone at Vea. Vea and Suh both eat double teams w/ Suh's double being only a quick chip and then climb to White. Both of those win (White can't fit because of the easy cimb). The real problem is Vea here. Put on absolute skates. I've never seen that. He stalemates double teams (or worse) like its nothing. No stalemate; all beatdown here. You wonder why he got hurt? Guy's gas tank was obviously spent. Tired guys get put in extremely awkward positions and can't protect themselves.

Touchdown Football Team
(:31) (Shotgun) A.Gibson left end for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN. TB-V.Vea was injured during the play.
4th & Goal at TB 1

Inside Zone to JPP and White (who have C and D). Interior gets no penetration against doubles, TE singles JPP and wins big, White barely even reacts. Easy 6.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is a lot of ownership in the epically bad drive starting with the Coach and the leaders on Defense.

Might be true, might not. But I wouldn't come to that conclusion reading Nobody's breakdowns. I can appreciate the effort but I've said it for years, it's too much egocentric based analysis. Everything is either a bad Bowles playcall or a play loss for the Bucs because of effort. That type of analysis isn't fair to DW (or anyone for that matter) and it's not even how PFF grades things.
