Welcome to Tampa Elijah Roberts

Another EDGE Rusher, this time from a P4 school.

I like the fact that Licht is filling needs as opposed to going BPA

Roberts had 23.5 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles in two seasons at SMU. He is a disruptive and versatile pass rusher with violent hands. Roberts always seems to have a plan, and he works half the man. He pushes the pocket between the tackles, and he drives offensive tackles rushing off the edge. He continues to work when he doesn't win with his first move. He shoots his hands, presses blockers inside and keeps his outside arm free when setting the edge against the run. He slips blocks at defensive tackle and defensive end. Roberts also chases with good effort. -- Steve Muench

I had Robert’s on my radar, I think he plays on the DL as opposed to 3-4 edge

This is more like the edge rushers Bowles likes. Athletic with good length.

I'm pretty certain it's a mix, otherwise we'd have a LB or two.

I remember that. It’s not everything.

Obi Melifonwu blew up the combine that one year and then became just a guy currently in the UFL.

Emmanwori was a 2nd rounder.

Roberts is probably the most intriguing prospect (second being Parrish) of this entire bunch to me. From a very brief look at the film, I see a lot of traits and tools that make me think he can be an effective and multi-contract player at that hybrid iDL/Edge.

I'll have to find good film against legitimate competition to vet that though. And I'll have to find the will and the time to do an actual postmortem evaluation of his NCAA career. I might. Might not.

But right now, I'm leaning toward a hunch that this young man might not just stick, but might take snaps from folks.

Honestly even I feel I'm drinking the Kool aid on this draft too much, but damn do I love it.

There are more than enough snaps to go around the DL for this kid to make an impact soon. I would not be surprised if he's starting come playoffs. He has that feel and while Hall has grown a lot, he isn't exactly all pro.

Add enough pressure across the DL, sprinkle in some ballhawks and we can gumbo this thing up to a respectable D again.

If anyone cares to, please find and link here some viable film for Roberts. I'm not looking for highlight film. I'm looking for film, particularly against legit competition, that I can review and generate some notes regarding snaps.

If you want to do that, please @ me with your link. I'm going to be out of town until next the middle of next week, but I'll have some time toward the end of next week to evaluate this player with a level of fullness that makes me feel comfortable in assessing them.

Appreciate it. I'll watch this at some point in the coming days, take notes on snaps, and just present those so folks can index the time snaps with analysis.

I am super high on the guy. As I get older I start to feel that guys who are used to penetrating the O-line and disrupting plays in college even against inferior competition will develop a knack for doing that no matter who ends up in front of them. That is the only way they know how to play the game and that is what brought them this far.

Obviously Kancey was a 1st round pick, but he had that habit to him of wanting to live in the backfield.

Yes and no. Teams all across the league approach this with a "who can help now and who can we maybe develop down the road, and which position group needs help ASAP."

But to act as if teams properly evaluate guys all the time is to say every 1st rounder is a pro-bowler and every 7th or UDFA is cut before game 1.

Talented guys are found in mid-late rounds too.

Donald Penn, pro bowl left tackle, UDFA
Bucky Irving, 4th rounder

We could extend this list of course, but I think it's more useful to at least wait to see how they look in the preseason before writing anyone off.

He looked pretty good in preseason, but that stat surprised me.

Here's hoping Roberts gets meaningful snaps and contributes moving forward. I think he could be a steal.

He was so successful that several outlets thought he was a DE/Edge.

Roberts and Parrish were the two guys I was especially intrigued with after prelim look at their tape, movement, and metrics.

I actually did look at both of their college tape after that prelim look. I was very pleased with what I saw and my intrigue has transitioned to expectations for these two.

Unfortunately, I’m just not having the time presently to do any definitive prospect write-ups and so forth right now, so I don’t anticipate writing up an in-depth eval like times past.

Roberts impressed me with his strength and his hands, doesn’t have the bend to be a DE/Edge but has every other tool you would want.

Parrish impressed me with his tackling ability for his size.

Really impressed with the entire draft class honestly.

Love the progress of this man child so far. I have high hopes for him. Strength and a natural feel for getting into backfield is this kid's play style. With Vea capable of crushing pockets, Diaby being a bullrush monster, Kancey being the Swiss army knife, having another pocket disruptor that can dominate his man physically will immensely help our anemic pass rush.

The only way we get sacks however would still be with Reddick playing like the Reddick of Eagles circa 22. A prime Shaq Barrett would be getting 25 sacks playing next to these guys. I sorely hope Reddick still has the juice left in him to capitalize on his peers' propensity to wreck the pocket.
