Revisiting AB interest thread on buczone

Post by kaimaru »

It was fun to revisit. acmillis was by far the most against signing AB.

SCHEFTER: ANTONIO BROWN VISITING BUCS

Snake: Oh no

PrimeMinister: Goddammit

acmillis: Hard pass even if it was free

BUCCABEER: It also makes no sense to sign him as a #3 WR.

BJJ34: So a diva coming in to wear on our two non diva wide outs.
..............
Miller4Prez64: Schefter just tweeted that Brown and the Bucs have agreed upon a 1 year deal and set to debut against the Saints in Week 9.

beardmcdoug: Image

terrytate: I wouldn't have done this but here's hoping for the best.

MJW: This feels like jumping the shark, and I hate the idea of messing with the chemistry of a 1st place team.
But the 40% chance AB can be AB for four months is seductive, especially with Evans and Godwin hurting and OJ Howard done.
I don't make this move, but I understand why they did.

My favorite:

acmillis:
Pete Carroll: The Bucs are lookingImagelets fake interest in AB so that TB scoops him up and he drops a giant deuce in their locker room

ESPN: Seattle interested in AB

Arians: Sign him

Pete Carroll in February: Image

Licht in February: Why didn't this work, he was such a big name?!?!?

Doctor: That's some 4D chess

Follow up thread when he actually signed

Tom Brady’s blessings know no boundaries. He’s somehow kept AB on the straight and narrow the last 12 months despite AB’s modest salary and less than preferred targets.

He has been outstanding for us. Hopefully he can play with Brady here for many more years.

Had I been around to tell them all this was a great signing they would've said I was being obtuse. This is group think 101. Everyone is afraid of standing out on their own. What @Snake posted is Group Think 102: When we're all wrong, we're really all right. Let's just pretend we didn't say what we all said and do a complete 180.

I'll say this definitively. Only an idiot would think twice or complain about the chances of your team signing Antonio Brown. I cannot fathom what ANYONE who was ever against this signing was thinking. Players like him do not grow off trees.

Furthermore, this is a completely different offense without AB in the lineup. Brady gets so many more easy and quick completions. You can make a legit argument that AB is the MVP of this offense

Has it worked out? Absolutely. Do I think we'd be okay without him? Sure (not nearly as good, but still okay). Will I eat crow on this one? SURE.
Am I happy to be wrong while staring at my knock off SB replica ring? ABSOLUTELY!

Having AB is transformative for the offense. With him on the field, it essentially guarantees that whatever decision the defense made on who to cover with whom, it ends up being the wrong one.

With Lenny playing so damn well, and when we get Gronk back, our 11 personnel is all but impossible to stop. With Evans and Godwin being such good blockers, along with Gronk, we can run effectively and make defenses pay for playing pass first. We can sell play action which seems to always produce a big play for us.

Without AB a lot of the above loses effectiveness because our #3 guy can likey be taken out and the domino effect from there hurts everything about the offense

Of course we can still be plenty efficient without AB but he pushes the offense over the top.

Who knew that the key to getting AB to not be totally fucking insane was to make him live with Gisele and Tom. She must be strict.

Hey… he hasnt been divaish… yet. Maybe our non divas wore off on him? Or maybe just being in the locker room with Tom has allowed him to see the BIGGER picture.

"if I'd been around to state my opinion then, my opinion would have turned out to be the correct one" is the most Bootz response to anything ever.

BTW, if you gave me the exact same set of circumstances again, I'd come to the exact same conclusion. Here was a guy who got cut by the Raiders after playing zero games because he was a headache and then cut by the Patriots (Tom Brady's LAST team) after playing 1 game. This is after being dealt for peanuts by a team he'd been player of the decade for. He had multiple unrelated legal issues as well.

I'll always defend rational process over outlier results. Signing AB was an irrational idea that worked out.

The problem is and always has been that fans think NFL teams care about issues like this as much as you do. They'll give you chance after chance unless your name is Ray and you do something completely unforgivable (well 1 got off).

Junkie Josh Gordon caught his 1st pass in 2 years yesterday. Richard Sherman, AB, all here. Why? Players like that help you win games. That matters more than your Raheem Morris school of team captains philosophy does.

While I agree, the FO doesn't give 2 craps about issues like that. They do care about if the player will be suspended. In this case, his suspension was up. Tom vouched for him. They got him for peanuts. To MJW's point, if we didn't have Tom Brady and they didn't have a close relationship then yes. Your take would have been the smarter take. But we know Tom loved him and he loved Tom. That alone should have swayed us.

Speaking of AB, per NextGen stats yesterday:
Fastest player of the game
Antonio Brown 20.95 MPH
Tyreek Hill 20.35 MPH

Who says no one is faster than the Cheetah.

Again, 3 teams gave up on him in the previous year. 3 teams. Including two which are famous for not caring about character.

You show me a guy with that profile again, I'll stand by the exact same decision. And I'll be right far more often than I'm wrong. Far more.
