Welcome Jake Camarda

Post by Cheb »

Say hello to our new punter.

Maybe this offers some solace? I didn't know that he was punting with a suboptimal ball in college.

If he’s a great Punter then it was a good pick.

You’re so clairvoyant when it comes to the draft. We need to get you in a front office. Not sure how it hasn’t happened yet.

We don't need a guy who can boot it 80 yards, we need a guy that can hang it in the air. Saves $2.8M in cap.

I hope he's great but even if he is, it's a terrible pick.

It's almost as though Licht said to himself, "I haven't really nailed it yet with any of this year's picks...How can I take it over the top and just really royally F- up the whole draft? I got it - I'll take a punter in a round there are still players who could actually make an impact on the board."

You can always use a guy who can boot it 80 yards. Always. And Araiza can hang it in the air.

You don't draft punters or kickers this high. Apparently Licht the Lush hasn't learned from his mistakes with Roberto Aguayo and Matt Gay

Did you not hear the commenters saying Araiza is a line drive kicker with no hang time? If two teams take a punter before you're best pick. Well maybe you should think you're take is bad. Nope keeping being an armchair GM.

I mean, I can't hate it as Pinion was really bad last year, got hurt for multiple games, and his replacement shanked kicks so badly that even Michael Koenen would cringe. Saves us a couple of mil on the cap too if we move on.

Araiza line drives the ball. In college the returners wouldn’t line up far enough back. In the NFL Tyreek Hill dreams of an 80 yard line drive punt.

Ravens took a punter before we did. They have no clue how to draft either?

He'd miss out on Araiza since he went at the top of the sixth.Shame on the Ravens for starting the run on punters, everyone knows they draft terribly.

I would say getting good players is most important thing. But to each their own.

Well, they could probably take a punter each round and nail all of them.

Does an average draft have seven good punters?

If the Ravens also have a terrible process but are a top tier drafting team, how can it be the most important thing?

They also clearly made a mistake. The Bucs compounded it by then trading next year's pick because they didn't have a pick to get the guy they wanted.

I'd love to know the thought process driving all the punter picks. Is it emphasizing special teams? A lack of veteran talent? Or just a question of good value? Or is this class just that special for punters?

I heard people say there was three really good punters to be had, but didn’t think we were gonna see them go that early. I honestly think we wanted the dude from Penn State and panicked when the Ravens took him.

A good friend of mine works for the Dawgs and this is what he texted me when we picked Camarda:

“Good for the Bucs for drafting Georgia’s punter- Jake Camarda. He’s really good, recordsetting average and handled our kickoffs too so at least you got one of our guys!”
I said what I said

According to people smarter than he, he's a rock-steady punter, a plus kickoff guy, and an excellent holder. He's big enough to mix it up on special teams and he likes to do so. He runs a 4.55. He was a Ray Guy finalist, and he had 71 Touchbacks on 102 kickoffs.

Was the 4th round too high? I mean, maybe. It seems like we could have gotten him in the 5th or 6th. But it feels like, at worst, we got a solid punter/kickoff guy who we'll be paying pocket change for the next four years as we address other needs.

And most importantly, his hangtime is ridiculous.

Our special teams coach Keith Armstrong gave a press conference today, and he spoke about Camarda's kickoff hangtime being about 4.6 seconds. For reference, 4 seconds flat is pretty decent.

In short, Camarda skies them and has the leg to kick it in the end zone. It wouldn't be too much to ask him to fine-tune his kickoffs to hang in the air for as long as possible and drop at about the five yard line. If done consistently, that would be devastating for opposing field position.

Anyways, the press conference is worth the watch.

These are the picks that really get me excited. Guys who provide some sort of advantage. In the case of Camarda, assuming he's decent at what he does, the advantage is getting his services for pennies for four years. That's a cap advantage, considering what we were paying Pinion. In the case of someone like Kieft, it's a strategic advantage, as he allows us to do some things we couldn't really do previously (and that today's hybrid-heavy speed defenses will struggle to account for, if we do it right.)

I feel like exploiting these little advantages whenever possible - on and off the field - is the difference between the consistently good franchises and everyone else.
