Damn you NFL.com

Did I have it right?
Re: With the 19th or 20th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
I've been seeing that we pick at #19.
I'm looking at defenders pretty much exclusively: Baker's our guy as is Irving, our OL is pretty much set and there's no really dominant offensive guard in the draft (and even if there was that's a hard ask for me). Evans is still going strong, Godwin I presume is coming back, and McMillan had an excellent finish to his rookie season. Cade and friends are an underrated tight end room. We're good on offense top to bottom, or at least from a first-round, high priority perspective.
Defense though? I think we need help basically everywhere but interior DL. In looking at the top defenders, Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter, Mason Graham, Will Johnson, and Mykel Williams are all top ten picks, imo. James Pearce, Nic Scourton, Jalon Walker, and Malaki Starks are right behind them and should also be gone by the time we pick.
Which leaves us some remaining options. Unfortunately, there isn't really a great off-ball linebacker around here, nor are there any really intriguing threats on the edge remaining. We could go with a corner like Shavon Revel out of East Carolina, but he's coming off of injury so who knows where he'll end up. Here's some other names for consideration:
--
I personally love Benjamin Morrison, the 6'0" 190lb cornerback out of Notre Dame, but I don't think he fits our defense. Morrison lives by the press and dies by it, and thankfully he lives far more than he dies. Moreover, he plays a TON of man, which given his skills of course he should, but we are a very zone-heavy team. Dude's a great corner with lockdown potential, and if Bowles would let him play his game, I would love every minute. Bowles however may not love it, and want to go in a different direction that more fits his scheme. Moreover, Bowles may say that between Dean and Zyon, he's fine at outside corner thank you very much, though adding Morrison would future-proof us against the day where Dean leaves to cover grass for a different team.
Nick Emmanwori, the huge 6'3" 227lb safety out of South Carolina, could be a real threat here. The dude is BIG and he is FAST and he gets plenty of tackles. When he makes plays he gets your attention, but he doesn't make as many plays as you'd like to see. He's not a huge hitter, he doesn't attack the ball as much as you'd like. At the moment, Nick is a wish.com version of Sean Taylor who you hope to upgrade to the real thing, with athleticism up the wahzoo and potential in spades if he can play with aggressiveness and tempo. He would fit a huge need on the team and has the potential to elevate the defense at a spot (strong safety) that was a sieve throughout the year.
Could we go with Walter Nolen, the 6'4" 300-ish pound defensive lineman out of Ole Miss? I guess so. He's a great run defender who flashed against the pass at Ole Miss this year. Is he the best use of our resources? I'd argue no. There's not much he does that Vita, Kancey, and Hall don't already do. Would having him be nice to mix into the rotation, especially if Gholston and/or Gaines leave, for sure. But if Walter Nolen were on the roster last night, he wouldn't have been a difference maker who helped win the Commanders game and keep us in the playoffs.
My dark horse candidate in the first round is Jahdae Barron, the 5'11" 200lb corner from Texas. He just won the Thorpe award as the best defensive back in college football, and I think he earned it. Jahdae plays far bigger than he is and has a knack for making plays. Most draft sites I'm looking at put him as a second rounder, but I think he's got the makings of a Bowles DB. He has great instincts in zone and he's a very capable run defender. He'd probably be best playing at the slot, but I think for Bowles he would make a solid safety, so he could use his instincts to play freely and make plays on the ball. Would this be a reach, probably, especially given that I don't think he's going to test well athletically. Would the pick work out, though, and make us glad that we got him on the team, probably so.
--
Morrison would be my plan A, but again scheme fit is a big question there and he may not fall to that spot. Failing that, I'd trade down, grab an additional second or third rounder, and build up defensive depth across the board. There will be good players at the bottom of the first this year.

Edge:
1. Abdul Carter (2)
2. Nic Scourton (10)
3. Mykel Williams (18)
4. Shemar Stewart (20)
5. Jack Sawyer (22)
6. James Pierce Jr. (30)
IDL:
1. Mason Graham (4)
2. Kenneth Grant (19)
3. Tyleik Williams (25)
4. T.J. Sanders (33)
5. Walter Nolen (34)
6. Omarr Norman-Lott (50)
Any of these guys that you like for there at 19?
I like Jack Sawyer's game film. The classic big country boy DE that seems to play above his level.
Re: With the 19th or 20th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
Taking Sawyer the first two days would be a mistake. He’s an edge setting DE at best.

Re: With the 19th or 20th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
I agree. I dont see him making probowls or getting double digit sacks. I think he will be a good pro because of his work ethic, but not worthy of 1st round
I think he will have a similar career to the white OSU DE that went to Cincy a while back (cant remember his name)

If McMillan is there at #19 I might be OK with it. Evans heir
Re: With the 19th or 20th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
@Cheb do you think Emmanwori would be a good fit at inside linebacker?
Re: With the 19th or 20th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
That would be quite an adjustment for him. Moreover, he'd have to learn how to navigate bigger bodies inside and fight through trash instead of running in open space.
Possible, yes. Ideal, probably not. You could workshop it though.

I think we should look at it as how they fit our roster only. It's obvious we got to find a 4th down specialist.

Yeah, six picks and then a lot of disparity of the undrafted players coming to the 2025 camp. I looked at Wash and thought where the heck are all our first rounders. If ever we make an undrafted player a positive hot topic I will be glad.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 10:48 amYou make a good point. Not sure there will be one worthy of the pick.
Re: With the 19th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
Feel like it’s gotta be a CB or EDGE/OLB, draft seems ripe with them and it’s a need.
Would love to get Campbell from Bama but 19 is quite rich for him. We’ll see what Licht has in store.

Looking at defensive players, I’m digging OLB Mike Green out of Marshall and MLB Jihaad Campbell out of Alabama at the moment.
Re: With the 19th pick in the NFL draft the Buccaneers select…
Naming your kid Jihaad in 2004 is peak psycho. I can only imagine the aggression that was modeled to him in his youth.
Perfect for a linebacker. I’m all in.

And then the Rams were smart enough to trade up in the second round and draft his D-Line buddy Braden Fiske. They are both excellent players but the two of them together are a frightening force.
Verse had a 60 yard scoop and score in the wild card game. There was one guy on the Vikes who could've made the tackle on Verse to prevent the TD. Take a wild guess who threw the block on him that sprung Verse?

Ok. Call me crazy… Who is the best guard in this draft?
Maybe not 19th, but early.
Watching the Lions road grade everyone.. Put a LG in there with our other 4 and just dominate the next 5+ years.

We pick 19th, so we definitely need a cornerback. At this rate, we’re likely to draft Burke from Ohio State, which I’m fine with that.
@Zarni , tell me more about Burke

I think he has been a bit of a disappointment. After great Fr and So years he never took the next step.
That being said, no one is throwing at him in the playoffs so he must be doing something right.
Definitely not a mid 1st rounder though

If you go to a CB prospect's team they usually arent even the best on their team. Maybe all the know it all's are waiting for "the" update.
