Netflix Disappoints Millions During Mike Tyson VS Jake Paul Fight

Not only was the Mike Tyson VS Jake Paul main event a joke, Netflix couldn’t handle the traffic!

Millions of viewers encountered major buffering on Friday night during the biggest fight of the year. This is the first time Netflix has dipped their toes into a live sporting event of this size. There’s been rumors that the UFC is eyeing them as a future partner when their contract with ESPN expires but who knows after that fiasco.

I started noticing buffering right before the co-main event within the Netflix app and it got worse as time went on.

I then exited out of the app, went back in and the stream was starting from the beginning of the show. I clicked the Live button and the buffering icon sat on 25% for five minutes.

IPTV & Sports Streaming Sites to the Rescue

I fired up one of my unverified IPTV services and was pleasantly surprised to find five different streams to choose from!

I tried the first one and it worked pretty well for about 15 minutes and then buffering started. You could tell it was from the main Netflix stream due to the red progress icon circle in the middle.

I moved onto the second stream and that one worked perfectly fine for the rest of the night. Again, I want to reiterate the fact that yes I am a Netflix subscriber and was using my IPTV service as a backup.

Surprisingly, all five of the streams within my IPTV provider seemed to be coming from different sources as the first one was still buffering when I checked back a few times but the second one remained flawless. Crazy how a $9 IPTV provider has enough common sense to ensure no buffering but Netflix doesn’t! Can you imagine the number of watch parties that came to an abrupt end due to this Netflix buffering?

My son went to a friend’s house as he and his buddies were going to watch the fight together. When he got home I asked him if the Netflix stream worked for him and he said that it didn’t. He said that they all gathered around one of his friends who pulled up the fight through a free sports streaming site on his phone.

Teachable Moment

Hopefully, Netflix learned something from this mess and are thankful that there were other “providers” available to save the day. It will be interesting to see if there is any subscriber fall-out due to this blunder. One thing that I know for sure is that I won’t be cancelling my IPTV service anytime soon as it serves as a fabulous backup for times like this.

Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul definitely won’t go down as the fight of the year, but it is almost certainly going to end up as the most watched combat sports event in 2024.
On Tuesday, Netflix revealed that Tyson vs. Paul topped out at over 108 million viewers for the boxing event. Meanwhile, the co-main event between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano becomes the single-most watched professional women’s sports event in the history of the United States with 47 million average minute audience as well as an estimated 74 million live viewers globally

According to TVision — a company that measures TV viewing — 56 percent of all U.S. TV viewing between 12am and 1am EST was tuned into the Tyson vs. Paul fight.

The event was also No. 1 overall on Netflix for the week with 46.6 million views (total hours viewed/runtime) through Sunday night.

It’s a remarkable number for a fight that saw Tyson return to action as a professional boxer for the first time in nearly 20 years. The 58-year-old former heavyweight champion ultimately went eight rounds with Paul before losing a unanimous decision.

Paul constantly touted the selling power of the fight after he announced plans to face Tyson with Netflix signing on as the streaming partner for the event. Rather that doing pay-per-view, Tyson vs. Paul was available at no extra charge for Netflix subscribers.

Based on the most recent financial disclosure from the streaming giant, Netflix boasts 282 million global subscribers. That means over one-third of all Netflix subscribers tuned in to watch the Tyson vs. Paul fight.
Paul’s Most Valuable Promotion’s also announced the final live gate figures for the event held at AT&T Stadium just outside Dallas with total revenue reaching $18,117,072, which sets a new record for combat sports events in Texas. The event is also now the second-biggest live gate for any boxing or MMA event outside of Las Vegas.
