Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Kinda on the expensive side all things considering.
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Veteran minimum is roughly $1.07m for a 10+ year vet. Sherman’s ego wasn’t letting that happen.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
I think this is a good move. He's a stop gap until everyone is healthy. He's at worst, at least as good as what we have at the moment, and he most likely won't be the worst player on the field.
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Meh.. $2.25M is peanuts by NFL standards. It's basically twice the vet minimum.
Janoris Jenkins is 33yrs old and making $7.5M and Joe Haden is 32 making $11M (last yr of his deal). Other than that there isn't any 32-33yr old CBs making more.
Here are some comparable players/salaries;
Jimmy Smith (Ravens) age 33 - $2.5M
Casey Hayward (Raiders) age 32 - $2.5M
As someone mentioned, Sherman is too prideful to play for the vet minimum. He was just wanted to feel respected I'd imagine since he's already made over $82 million in NFL salaries alone over the past decade. Given his personality and intelligence his post-NFL career will be as lucrative as his playing career.

Speaking of which, Dick Sherman and Russ Cockrell sound like the cast of the 80's porno.

I absolutely do not disagree. With either of those points.Dread wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 2:50 pmGotta be better than Russ Cockrell. The Outsider wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 2:48 pm I would like to welcome the corpse of Richard Sherman to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Older players who had multiple injuries the prior season, played 5 games, and spent the offseason worrying about off the field issues generally play for league minimum. See Antonio Brown.
The comparisons to the other players deserve context. Which of those other players were limited to 5 games last year because of injury? Which of those other players were without a team or better offers 2 days before October? Which of those players have criminal charges looming over them because of off field issues that occured over the summer?
He's here now, and it wasn't really as big of a deal as you made it. His ego shouldn't factor in when you take everything into consideration. He admitted this was the best offer he got, meaning whoever else reached out probably did take everything into consideration. Jason Licht don't care. He gets another big name, headlines for the Bucs, and hopefully a band-aid to the secondary issues.
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
This is basically a no risk deal for almost the vet minimum before incentives

Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Sherman's criminal charges have all been reduced to misdemeanors, I don't think they are an issue at all.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 2:57 pmI said all things considering.Dread wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 2:47 pm

Looking at the breakdown I'm not sure how it could be described as "expensive" by any NFL standard.

So not expensive anymore?King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 3:03 pmNow see, that's more like it. Seems he is in fact getting closer to that league minimum than you thought.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
So it's basically a $1mil deal heavy on the incentive side. That's a lot better than giving him $2.25mil flat out. Also means his other offers were nothing except league minimum
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Since he started negotiating without an agent, Sherman’s deals have been incentive laden. This isn’t surprising. Better stay healthy tho.

Some good stuff there. Richard and his wife are (seemingly) in a good place. Sounds like he had offers from 49ers and Seahawks. Brady also reached out.
“He reached out initially and just checked to see if I was in shape,” Sherman said via PFF. “He and I have had a relationship over the years. He’s a great guy. Very encouraging. Obviously, we had our history, but what happens on the field stays on the field. Off the field, I think we have a very solid relationship. And I think we both thought it would be really cool if we had an opportunity to play together at some point in time. Obviously, with our situations, it didn’t seem likely at any point in time, but he reached out and said they may express interest. And obviously, he wanted to play with me.”
I can see why Rodgers wanted more control…

Unfortunate. This team could use some domestic drama to put it over the top.Snake wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 3:23 pm https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-richard-sh ... 00566.html

Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
i certainly hope he can rush the passer.
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
If he can cover for longer than two goddamn seconds, which we currently cannot, the rush should take care of itself.

This sounds like the David Justice scene out of Moneyball. Cheb wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 1:47 pm Sherman is a great stopgap player. Is he what he once was, probably not. But he knows a thing or two about a thing or two. He won't be confused by offenses, he knows every trick in a receiver's book. He has great ball skills and has always been a willing tackler. Is he going to be our CB2, who knows, but he (probably) isn't going to be the reason our defense falls apart.
Good signing, addresses the biggest need on the team with a crafty vet. Here's hoping it works out.
Welcome to Tampa, Richard.
Let's squeeze every bit of football he has left in him.

Can we get more help Licht? What does Howard and a 2nd get these days?
Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
Another great "second chance" signing of a cheap vet that can contribute. It just made too much sense to not happen. It's wild to see all these names in red and pewter.
This is about as great of an upgrade as we could possibly have made at this point in the season and for this price. Sherman was still playing in top shape in 2019. He last played in Dec of last year, heck there are plenty of oft-injured players that have played far less in recent years.
He doesn't need to be great. We just need to do well enough during this coming string of mediocre WR groups until our SB champs can come back. Not to mention this young group could benefit greatly from having him around, 49ers raved about his leadership.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Richard Sherman
He almost doesn't even need to be able to run to be better than what we have had the first three games. Just being in the general vicinity of where he needs to be every now and then and attempting to interfere in some small way with the receiver getting a first down/TD would be marked improvement over what we have had.
