That would be the ultimate irony seeing as JG was literally the thing that was holding them back last season.

Oh 100%! I’m not a JG fan, for the record. From a distance it seems like the locker room prefers him though.King Bootz wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 8:03 pmThat would be the ultimate irony seeing as JG was literally the thing that was holding them back last season.

I'm not sure of any other instances in which a team replaced their long term starter and kept him on the team as a backup.

I can't really think of an example that would fit neatly into this category. I think this is just a weird confluence of personality types. Jimmy G realized he was going to make more from the 49ers than he would on the open market, and swallowed his pride I think. Shanny and Lynch, it kinda felt like a face-saving move...like, "See, we TOLD YOU we were fine with keeping him, so nuts to you if you didn't trade for him!" Lance, I have no idea what's going through his head. This feels like the opposite of a vote of confidence, but at the same time the 49ers never opened up the QB competition. Is that because of sunk cost? Or do they genuinely feel like this is a 1-2 situation and everyone involved knows it?
FWIW, I'm a huge Lance fan. I see a ton of elite traits in his profile. But it's impossible to feel like this doesn't have SOMETHING to do with a lack of confidence in either his game or his ability to stay healthy.

Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
I thought Eli Manning was in a similar situation. Apparently they let him lose the job after opening with two losses before handing it over to rookie Jones.

Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
The Giants didn't spend the entire offseason shopping Manning and telling him to stay away while letting Jones take all of the 1st team reps and telling the world this was his team now.
Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
I was going to mention Eli has probably the closest example, but yeah, it doesn't even work.King Bootz wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 11:18 pmThe Giants didn't spend the entire offseason shopping Manning and telling him to stay away while letting Jones take all of the 1st team reps and telling the world this was his team now.
I honestly can't think of one. Did Kurt Warner agree to mentor Marc Bulger at one point? Maybe that?

Doesn't mean anything, but it’s better than the alternative. Bucs had the most preseason sacks of any NFC team.

We blitzed a lot. Works against bad QBs. Torched against good ones.

Yeah, Bucs is 0-3.. Preseason doesn’t mean anythingPrimeminister wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 7:08 am Doesn't mean anything, but it’s better than the alternative. Bucs had the most preseason sacks of any NFC team.
Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
Do teams want to win their preseason games? Sure. Who doesn't want to win? But, if you know you have a good team, you need to be more interested in seeing what you have after your starters. When a team is set at the top of the roster, that means digging deep into the bottom of the roster because it's tougher to make the decision on who your backups are going to be. Winning becomes secondary.

He's picked off Brady twice and created a 3rd pick in the last 2 years. I'm good with it.

That's surprising considering he gets torched so much and only has 5 career picks. Wouldn't have guessed that 2 came off Brady.uscbucsfan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 11:44 am He's picked off Brady twice and created a 3rd pick in the last 2 years. I'm good with it.

Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
There was also the argument between him and Brady on the sideline. He/the coach said something about having Brady's number or something after his pick and Brady told him to go fuck himself....then Brady threw his tablet.King Bootz wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 11:49 amThat's surprising considering he gets torched so much and only has 5 career picks. Saints fans talk about him as the Brady kryptonite as he's had a few other pass deflections as well.

This is like the Bucs trading Dean and they already have 24 pages of material since 10am!

If a starting QB goes down who would be at the top of the list for trade? He could overide the no-trade clause if he's going where he would agree to it.
Plus be in charge of his contract.

Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
Seems like the 49ers decided that keeping JG around was better than him catching on and starting for a division rival.
(they also have some deep down concerns about Lance. tee hee)

Yep he's an instigator. Made a guy say fuck it and get himself ejected from the game vs Chicago.

"Alright, we just literally asked every other team in the league and they all said no."
"Well...do we want to keep him?"
"...No."
"shit"
Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
Would I bring him in for basically nothing to compete with (checks notes) Fred Johnson and Brandon Walton? Yes.

Re: 2022 Offseason Thread
I'd offer him a practice squad gig and see what happens, for sure.
