I'd be pretty bummed with having either Carolina or NO QB. I'd be hopeful with ATL QB.

Prefer Mayfield to any of them

I think Penix is going to be good. Carolina and New Orleans will be in QB purgatory for a while

Baker is a prime example that franchises fail QBs more than QBs fail franchises. I think the same is probably true for the others.

Seriously, you do realize that when you try to use that as a black mark on Baker you are doing so by endorsing the brain trusts of Cleveland and Carolina.

So please, tell me what makes them so great? I'm listening.

It is undoubtedly true that quarterbacks (and many other players) never developed into their full potential due to the organizations they ended up with.

Keep in mind, this is also true for pretty much everyone, everywhere, all the time, inside and outside of football.

Baker isn't the surgeon Brees was. Very few are. Brees saw things pre-snap and knew exactly where to go with the ball. Baker is creative and does well improvising, buying time.

Similarly, Brees' arm is nowhere NEAR what Baker's is. And while he was great navigating the pocket, Brees didn't have the escapability Baker does.

Other than being white, 6 foot tall Texas boys, they don't compare at all.

Exactly. Stupid signing.

We will never accomplish anything with Baker at the helm but may win one or two extra games assuming Trask is truly a bust. If Baker starts over Trask I'll be pretty discouraged about the next few years of this team.

The only good scenarios right now are A. Trask beats out Baker, exceeds expectations and gives us hope for the future. B. Baker wins the battle (meaning Trask sucks) but plays even worse than he has and we win minimal games in 2023, snag Caleb in 2024.

Yeah that's not really what I was comparing them for but I don't have the energy today to go back and forth so I'll just say this. Situation more than style. Dumped by the team that drafted you because of injury (the same injury) for a shiny new toy. Jilted by another team. Basically I said he could be our Drew Brees. A still young franchise QB we didn't draft that other franchises gave up on for whatever reason. That has come to fruition.

I think it’s safe to say he figured something out.

The general sense from Cleveland fans, is he started taking the job more seriously after getting kicked to the curb and bounced around the league.

This all day. People pretend he was the model teammate and citizen in Cleveland and Carolina. He was not. By his own admission. He had to grow up a lot and eventually did so. That's what changed. Had he stayed in Cleveland I doubt they'd be getting the same QB that we have now.

True.

Also true: Cleveland and Carolina suck as organizations.

Both left original franchise after enduring a torn labrum.

We retire Drew. Resurrect Baker.

I think we’ll like how this new OC handles the offense. We’ll compete for the division and have a few things to be excited about.

It could also blow up spectacularly and we set our sights on a top 5 pick. You can’t go into a season with only Trask under contract. So I’m okay with this.
Not terrible for an initial reaction.

Glad I was eating crow before he even finished his first season too.
Backside wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2023 1:05 pm No matter what happens from here, I have crow to eat on Baker. I want to wrap up the division and see how he and the team look in the playoffs before we really start to have the conversation. But I am very open to giving him mid level starting QB money on a two year deal or something. We won't get a top QB draft pick, I'd be fine drafting one to develop but they wouldn't be the starter next year. I think Baker has earned that.

So, when Baker is inevitably benched by week 8 and unceremoniously leaves at season’s end. Will that mean Baker actually stinks or Bowles and Co aren’t nearly as smart as you portray them to be?

Or somehow, someway all are still amazing and you’ll find more excuses?
They're pretty smart.
