Congrats to Baker Mayfield on leading his team to yet another playoff berth, and another career statistical season. Also, for having what might be the most efficient statistical season of any starting QB in TB history, all while having to learn his 7th new offensive system. Kudos, Baker.

Sorry Baker haters, better luck next week. Maybe Mayfield will have a bad game and you can finally have something to celebrate!
We're paying the price for a half-measure taken by The Union 160 years ago.

The New Union will correct that mistake.

In 2023, Baker Mayfield came to Tampa Bay to battle Kyle Trask for the starting job as a presumed bridge QB on a rebuilding team. Since then, he has thrown for more touchdowns than anyone in the league

I know... I'M the one that has to change his opinion after ONE season where he wasn't average (or worse). Despite the fact that he's had 6 where he was average or worse, you don't have to think that this is either just a one off or a mixture of him being around above average talent and coaching. Yes, I know you and people like you think it's merely a coincidence that after losing Godwin and Evans, we lost 3 games to beatable opponents and then we all of a sudden win games when Evans comes back.

There literally are 25 QB's (or more), who would've done what Mayfield did this year (and last). He's not special in anyway. Look, you people can keep pretending he's more than he's not, but the reality is that he's just an average QB, nothing special, and easily replaceable.

Meanwhile, the bulk of the people bashing me for not being impressed by Mayfield, are the same ones wanting Bowles fired. How ironic is that? The guy who had a hand in building the WHOLE team isn't as good as the guy who's only part and parcel, responsible for a third of it.

Yeah, it was funny the first time as a bit.

But if you're really sticking to "no change" after the laughs, then it turns out we weren't laughing with you after all, but in fact at you.

Weren't you raving how last year was his fluke year and he was destined to regress?
Are we just recycling that again this year? And next?

Every year until he regresses, of course. :D

Regression isn't always terrible. It depends on how much of a regression we're talking about. All players go up and down from their personal mean. Going down from their mean, while technically could be labeled a regression, does not necessarily mean the player had a bad year.

Regardless, Mayfield is here for a while, I'd say. We will have plenty of time to debate the merits of keeping him or not over subsequent years.

First time in a long time I've been 100% certain we have our QBotF for the next 5+ years.

Baker put that team on his back yesterday to win that game.

Imagine watching your team have one of the best offenses in team history led by a very likable QB playing at a high level. And you don’t enjoy any of it because you are too stubborn to take a very well deserved L.

I've given Bowles credit for Mayfield and Coen. My gripes with him have nothing to do with those choices. They were obviously great ones.

It's not one season here in Tampa. It's two seasons. And Baker has thrown the most touchdowns in the NFL in that time frame. The list you originally posted that I quoted for posterity is truly hilarious in hindsight.

I don't get it. Game on the line. Backed up inside the 10. They go on a freaking 94 yard drive to essentially ice the game. 3rd and 9 dot to Evans. 3rd and 14 scramble picks up 30 yards. Just a huge backbreaking play.

All of that after completing a 4th and 8 for 33 yards. THEN completing a 32 yard TD dime piece on the run to take the lead on an 82 yard drive prior. He was picking up 3rd and long after 3rd and long all day while most everyone else shit the bed on offense with penalties.

Can't imagine actually being a Bucs' fan after all that and sticking to your guns and saying Gardner Minshew or Sam Howell could have done it. How miserable.

Offense scored 502 points this year. Any QB could have done it.

Wait, I thought the criticism for Bowles was that he had a hand in building the defense? You're saying that because the defense struggled, that's Bowles' fault, but the offense did well and it's all because of Licht?

Never been one of my complaints about Bowles other than wondering if we're scouting/drafting pass rushers that are more athletic and versatile (relatively) than ones that are pure pass rushers. But nice try at deflection =).

And you really, really don't want folks to start using your Mayfield argument against Bowles ;)

Only as serious as you are about Baker being no better than the 26th best QB in the league.

Regardless, those 7 teams fit your criteria perfectly. All 7 were able to field teams with more talent for more games this season, and all were sporting QBs, that according to you, were significantly better than Baker, and all finished with worse records. Easy peasy.

In fact, I could easily make the argument that if Baker had been the QB1 for any of those teams this season, they'd have finished with a winning record, instead of the losing records they earned.

Except maybe CIN. Burrow, while not elite, is a very good QB, and he posted a great statistical season.

The rest of those QBs, notably all on your list of QBs that are better than Baker, were unable to live up to your billing.

I love how the argument just changes to the Bucs now have some super elite roster that any QB would be great with. Quite a far cry from the pre season pontifications.

That's the thing when people are wrong. They have to keep changing the narrative to make their story fit. When you're right, you don't have to change anything. Shockingly, I haven't had to change my story about anything I've said about Baker. Or those QBs on his list that I said Baker was better than. All but Goff and Lamar have had seasons almost exactly as I predicted before the season started.
