Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
It’s the lull of the offseason… heavy boredom.
I think of all the guys we see get cut this year… we see Tyler Johnson and an unexpected defensive player like Minter get cut.

Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
Looking through the roster and payroll matrix…not seeing the surprise cut. The big earners have huge dead cap hits. Shaq Mason isn’t owed any guaranteed $ but he’s a sure thing there is this side of TB12. Maybe a starter from the secondary but the unit is so weak collectively, that wouldn’t really make sense either.
Once we get into the back 20 and guys not making much $, I’m not feeling surprised at that point.

Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
I’ll throw Darden out there. I wouldn’t be surprised. Many here wouldn’t either. But that would be a whiff on a supposed specialist and not a happy surprise to many.

Maybe McElroy if it costs more to keep him on the practice squad.
Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
Kevin Minter isn't even on the roster. With the drafting of ILBs KJ Britt and Grant Stuad last season and both making the team I'd think one steps into that role Minter had as the primary back-up ILB to White/LVD.
It will be interesting to see which WRs make it, we won't keep more than 6 on the 53. I suppose it's possible, but I doubt we'll put Godwin on the PUP list since that would mean he'll miss a minimum of the first 6 weeks and I assume he'll be ready before then given his surgery was Jan 3rd, so 8 months would be in time for week 1.
So it seems likely that two in that bottom group don't make the 53 and I'd think both would be good enough to get picked up by another team via waivers which means not landing on the Bucs practice squad.
My guess as of today is that Tyler Johnson and Jaelon Darden don't make the 53.

I could see Keanu Neal being a surprise cut. He's moving back to a safety position that he was never really good at to begin with and will at best be a backup.

Why Bootz, are you plugging Nolan Turner?
Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
Blaine Gabbert. This is unlikely but not impossible. If Trask wins the #2 job (which sounds not impossible listening to OBP right now), Griffin is a cheaper #3 option. Even though Bowles re-signed him, he might not share BA's fascination with him.
Ke'Shawn Vaughn. If they feel good about him, they don't draft White in the 3rd Round. If he's relegated to 4th string duty - again - the team may decide to move on.
Tyler Johnson/Jaelen Darden/Scotty Miller/Breshad Perriman/Gyril Grayson - One or more of them will be cut. They all could have big roles on the team, so whoever it is will be mildly surprising or somewhat shocking, if it's Miller (who I think would probably get dealt.)
Robert Hainsey. Three interior jobs opened up, at least temporarily, this offseason. He wasn't really considered for any of them. Nor is he the likely swing tackle. Not ideal for a 3rd round pick.
Ross Cockrell. If McCollum wins the 4th corner job and the team is comfortable with Logan Ryan taking reps at corner, Cockrell could be edged out of a job.
Kiki Neal. He's an interesting player, but he still faces tough competition to get on the field, with the team loaded in the secondary and with David and White playing those shallow zones. It wouldn't be shocking if it doesn't work out.
Ryan Succop. After his career year, he returned to being who he's been his entire career - an 80% kicker. The team would save nearly $2 mil by cutting him, and a lot of good things have been said about Jose Borregales.

I'd bet we keep 6 WRs with Darden and Grayson being the cuts. Unless Johnson comes to camp out of shape for the second year in a row.Dread wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 1:05 pm Kevin Minter isn't even on the roster. Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
Let's shelve Godwin from the discussion, since he's almost certainly going to begin the year on the PUP.
Evans and Gage are givens.
If we carry four more, that'll mean 1 will be cut from Johnson, Miller, Darden, Grayson, and Perriman, with another probably getting cut when Godwin comes back.
Darden is the most obvious candidate. BUT, he's also the guy with the most upside IMHO. You watch him at UNT, and he's a sneaky good route runner and he has the tools, at least, to be a good returner. But the training wheels have to come off. He'll have a very fair shot to win a job in camp.
Johnson's career is in his hands. He regressed last year. Whether that was because of conditioning or something else, I don't know. But if he doesn't return to who he was as a rookie (and at Minnesota) he'll make this decision much easier for OBP.
Miller...I don't know what he did to piss off BA. I'm hoping he gets a clean slate with Bowles. He's easily the most valuable of any of these guys. But if he can't get on the field, what's the point? If that's going to be the plan again, I'm confident we can get a pick for him from somebody.
I could also see it as simply Perriman vs Grayson. Neither guy is young anymore. Both offer a similar straight line speed skill set to the offense. Perriman has the much better resume, but Grayson and Brady were clicking late last year.
Frankly, I don't trust any of those guys. My idea scenario at this point is giving Julio Jones a void-year incentive deal like we gave Hicks and dangling a ring in front of him. I think he still has something in the tank. Then we'd enter the season with:
Evans
Gage
Julio
Miller
Darden
Perriman
That would give us an extra couple months to evaluate Darden, who could then get dumped when Godwin comes back if he's not making good. Otherwise, we could move on from Perriman.

Re: Surprise Camp Cuts: what say you?
I don't think there will be many trades for wide receivers this year. Pretty much everyone got new wideouts to play with in the draft and free agency.
Who in that group can make the most plays is who is going to stay, and the fun part of it is that all of them have proven they can make a play in the regular season. Some guys with walk off game winning catches are in that group.
WR is all you need to watch in the preseason to be entertained this year. And that's without Chris Godwin.

So with so much interest in the WR battle do we see those bottom 4 WR play a lot more 1st reps in preseason?

You have four established guys with big plays and key touchdowns on tape battling for the #4 spot on the roster. It's going to be great to watch.

Ideally they would get reps with Brady. Mike Evans doesn’t need preseason reps so let’s just give the other guys a shot to prove themselves._MB_ wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 8:42 amHow could they not? Maybe I’m putting too much stock into that going into halftime play against Green Bay in the playoffs. But I think Miller has a place in the WR room. Legit downfield speed.

Miller needs a change up. Teams now play him deep. I think last year was a down year due to lingering injuries though.

I tore my ACL, MCL, and PCL. MCL got two staples. ACL got a hole drilled thru my femur and they pulled it thru, tied a knot and sewed it into my muscle. Not sure how bad the PCL was.
