A few years ago we used to run a play where OJ Howard would line up on the right side of the line. At the snap he would run to the left, parallel to the line and then run verticle.

He would catch that ball either running across or going up the field BUT it often netted huge yards!

What was this play?
Why don't we use it anymore?

You see those types of blocks often with split-zone runs, especially out of the pistol. Basically, the tight end blocks away from the flow of the run to block the backside defender.

Let's say that there's a zone run to the right. The backside edge player is left unblocked by the offensive line. The tight end goes against the flow of the run and picks up that defender. There's different ways to call it; my offense calls them Cross blocks.

In the case that you're discussing, instead of the tight end smashing into the defensive end on a run play, it's a playaction pass off the same run action, the tight end pretends that he missed the block, then runs upfield usually in open grass for an easy completion. I don't know if there's any particular way to call this in popular parlance. I'd call it Blue Right Bronco Y-Cross Wheel. Your mileage will vary.
