Well said. I agree.Backside wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 1:55 pmWanted someone else with the pick, he never quite put it all together as a player. But he did have an out of body experience in the 2020 playoffs and was absolutely pivotal in a Buccaneers championship. For that I'll always appreciate him as a player.
And I'm glad his Bucs tenure didn't end with a crippling 'thank you for your service contract'. Clean break, minimal resentment.
Good luck (but not that much) DW, thanks for the chip.

@Bootz, I know, I know. It’s bad business sense on the part of these players. But, damn…they really just want to be here.

I haven’t seen any thoughts on the resigning of Wolford- nothing? Do you think it changes any chance of drafting any QB now that we have 3?
I said what I said
Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
We just spent a boatload on Mayfield, Trask is cheap and in the building, and Wolford rounds out the room nicely.Babeinbucland wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 1:51 pm I haven’t seen any thoughts on the resigning of Wolford- nothing? Do you think it changes any chance of drafting any QB now that we have 3?
I think the likelihood that we draft a quarterback is pretty low now, especially given the starting holes and depth issues across the rest of the roster.

I would agree. Unless there’s someone they really like that falls. Those 4 picks in the first three rounds need to fill holes.Cheb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 3:12 pmWe just spent a boatload on Mayfield, Trask is cheap and in the building, and Wolford rounds out the room nicely.Babeinbucland wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 1:51 pm I haven’t seen any thoughts on the resigning of Wolford- nothing? Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
I fully believe OBP believes they got their savior.
Baker was #1 on everyone's board the year he came out, from Bowles to Bruce to Licht. They were over the moon to get him and hitch their wagon to him. They are true Baker believers. As are Mike Evans, Wirfs, Liam, and a long list of many others.
We could get a QB. 4 year, high talent back up plan is worth a good pick. But it would stem from a "he's too good to pass up" BPA moment in the draft.
If not I think they are more than good with this QB room for the season.

Mostly agree with this. However, Trask is going into the last year of his deal. I find it unlikely he’s back in 2025. And Baker’s contract isn’t one where they decided to set it and forget it at QB.Doctor wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 4:34 pm I fully believe OBP believes they got their savior.

While it's true that Trask is on the last year of his deal, I think that makes us more likely to draft his successor NEXT season, not now. Trask is on another inexpensive year, and I would be surprised if the Bucs' braintrust didn't let him play on it.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 5:37 pmMostly agree with this. It's not, but it's highly flexible. Even if it gets fully played out that would be because things are going very well.

I just like that potential backup player to have a year in the system before stepping into the role. Never like feeling forced to draft or sign someone. Experienced backup QBs are pushing $10M annually.Cheb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 6:35 pmWhile it's true that Trask is on the last year of his deal, I think that makes us more likely to draft his successor NEXT season, not now. I think the details carried online which have been available to us included the restructure. The description of the restructure is exactly what's been available. In short, he was thought to carry a cap hit of $5.5mil and that's what he has now.

Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
This is kind of the point though. As others have pointed out Baker's contract is basically a glorified franchise tag. If he doesn't play well they are not married to him beyond 2024. It's great from a flexibility standpoint, but there's a chance we go into 2025 with nothing at QB again. I won't say it's likely. I expect Baker to play well, but shit happens. Best to be prepared for it.

Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
An accurate evaluation of how good the Bucs free agency signings, and draft picks won't be known until at least halfway through the coming season.
Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
Thats a constant truth for most teams. Teams that usually are watching their old answers inch closer to the cliff, or teams rinsing themselves off of the 2020 QB class. Even those who are sold on their guy for awhile have valid injury concerns alway looming. If you are looking to buy certainty you're in the wrong sport.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 9:03 amThis is kind of the point though. I listen to Pewter Report. Scott Renyolds was quoted last spring that Wolford is the best 3rd string QB in the league. Based on what I saw out of Wolford in preseason had me thinking last year that take may not be far fetched so I'm happy he's back.Babeinbucland wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 1:51 pm I haven’t seen any thoughts on the resigning of Wolford- nothing? As far as QB in the draft, yes it's possible. They'll need someone to groom eventually. However, Baker will be here a while so maybe it's not as pressing need right now.

2025 free agents has grown to 36 players - this whole team is running on short contracts.
Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
The NFL is a short window league.
Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
I am really liking all the one year deals. Really sets us up well for the draft.

Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
The days of slow developing a team or "being set for 8 years" are gone. The nfl operates on short windows.
Like it or not we are in the middle of a window. And dudes like Baker, Evans, LVD, etc fully believe in this window. And it IS the Bucs for the next 2 years at least.
We'll revisit after 2 years.

This is why I don't really care about "dead cap" or cap space beyond the current year. It's a one year league at best.Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 11:35 am The days of slow developing a team or "being set for 8 years" are gone. The nfl operates on short windows.

Yeah. Anyone who plays well, we can look at resigning. Keep our good players, fill out the middle of the roster with short contracts. Hopefully draft well for the rest. Easier said than done but beats the days of being Youngry….

Licht cleared out 90mil in dead cap in a single season, so I don't think he gives too many fucks about it either.

What's it matter? Unless I say I'm going to force KC to give us Mahomes, you're going to poo poo any suggestion I make.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 5:49 pm @CannonFire Please tell us what your plan at QB would have been for this team if it didn’t include Mayfield? If you aren’t capable of that please stop. It’s pointless. He’s the QB here until he isn’t. What’s the point of mocking people for appreciating his story and thinking he can win here?
Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread
That doesn't equate to viewing this as a "1 year league".BucsNBills wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 4:46 pmI mean, the GMS who accrue all the dead cap don't seem to care about it either.

And if you're keeping track, we have $42mil+ in dead cap this season, 5th highest in the league. THATS why Licht is going with a series of 1 year deals.
