He seems like a genuinely nice guy. A humble family man. Kind of reminds me of Dungy. Easy to root for. I wonder if this makes it more likely that they draft defense in round 1?

I think defense makes the most sense. We need more youth in the front seven and we have three starters in the secondary hitting FA next year with a big extension for AWJ looming.

He gave his reasons and they are valid. He did the "CEO" thing in New York and it didn't work. He tried to be something he wasn't comfortable with instead of coaching and leading his way.

That type of self discovery is why a lot of guys succeed the 2nd time around. Instead of trying to fit into this fabricated box, he's going to lead this team the way he sees fit I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that.

Totally agree. The only offensive spot I think they'll look at is guard. I'd still like to see Suh back as well.

When there's evidence it works for him, I'll like it fine. There aren't a ton of coaches who can manage to do both successfully - call plays and coach the entire team. When he shows he can what McVay or Belichick do, I'll have no complaints.

Same. But I think it's one of the prices we pay for pulling off this move. We got to keep almost everything else in place.

I gave my fin friends so much shit for their "co-OC" bullshit under Flores, but this is a bit different. Flores was a defense guy making and thus there was no real clear "head of offense" over there and it was a mess.

While we have co-DCs it's still clear who the head defensive guy is- it's Bowles. And he's even going to call the plays (another thing I don't like). In which case Kacey and Larry will be splitting day to day DC duties, which should be fine. I will feel better if/when Bowles appoints his successor to playing calling though, but that will likely come with time. I don't think either has ever had play calling duties before so it'll likely be something Bowles wants to groom them on first before fully turning over.

C'mon people. Give me a list of current head coaches that don't call offense or defense. (Not counting rookies as we don't know).

Where's your list of coaches that have done both and failed? Belichick, Reid, Payton, McVay, LaFleur, Pederson, Shanahan.

Who's been a playcaller as a HC and has failed?

Sean McDermott had a DC. Fired him and took over calling defense.
Bill Belichick calls defense.
Brian Flores called defense in Miami.
Robert Salah does not call defense.
Zac Taylor calls the offense.
Mike Tomlin calls the defense.
Kevin Stefanski calls the offense.
John Harbaugh gives direction to his coordinators before a series, but won't call specific plays.

So out of 8 HCs I looked up, 6 calls plays. Salah was asked why he wasn't calling plays on defense. So yes, sampling a quarter of the league, most HCs call plays.

I am definitely curious how Bowles does as HC his 2nd time around and if he learned from the issues that he had in his first HC stretch. From speaking with Jets fans on Reddit, it appears that his biggest issues with them were his gametime management and overall development as an HC. By some accounts, he was absolutely bad when it came to clock management, and even worse when it came to adjustments. Apparently, he had a lack of adjustments, especially on defense, that became noticeable not only on a game basis but on a weekly, season, or even career stretch. He'd get blown out by a divisional opponent, and then trot out the same gameplan against them a couple of weeks later. Jets fans mentioned that issues that were consistent in year one were consistent in year 4.

Hopefully, he learned from his original stint and his subsequent tenure here under Arians as DC, and now HC.

I mean I think he's solved whatever issues he may have had with defensive adjustment as evident by us fielding a top flight defense in recent years.

No way of knowing about his clock management until that comes up. Heck, some coaches have clock specialists on staff. Given BA wasn't shy about having a huge staff, that could be something.

Overall as far a retread HC go, Bowles was at the top of my list. I'm so glad we're the ones that get to have him his second time around. I expect great things.

The retread thing doesn't bother me. If anything, I see it as a plus - learning from mistakes, etc.

Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, and Pete Carroll were all fired. Heck, Carroll was fired twice. All three are Hall Of Famers.

If a guy is the right guy, he's the right guy.

I don't think this move really changes things much. Many thought Bowles would, or atleast could be the successor to BA. I just don't think we saw it occuring quite this way.

Perhaps I'm just overly optimistic, but I don't see any negatives with this move.

Bowles was already calling the defense and that's not changing.
Brady/Lunchbox still run the offense, but with less influence from BA (which means more from Brady).
Licht and the personnel staff remains the same
Now Cool Daddy BA can just be the good guy in the lockeroom and at OBP instead of having to be the heavy sometimes as HC.

I may have said this already, but I was never particularly fond of BA's in-game strategy acumen.

We still get to keep all the things we like about the system and culture BA brought in, but now let Bowles and Brady have more of an influence in what happens.

@Dread well said. Apparently though if Bowles calls the defense as head coach they'll start playing poorly. Or the offense will. Or......I really don't understand the objection to our head coach calling plays for a specific unit.

I have no problem with this. Most people up here in NJ didn't have a big problem with Bowles as the HC, it was everything else. The team was crap and they did a very poor job of finding a franchise QB. Rex Ryan and his cronies drafted Geno Smith and Bowles was left with trying to make it work. They brought in Fitzpatrick to be a player-coach/stop-gap and that clearly didn't work. Under Bowles, they drafted Petty (in the 4th), which was fine, but then they brought in McCown instead of drafting a QB in 2017. Imagine how different things would be in the NFL had the Jets drafted Mahomes at #7 instead of letting the Chiefs grab him at #10.

Yeah, the NFL would be a far worse place with Mahomes subjected to the curse of the Jets.

That would've been Todd Bowles 3rd year. He might still be the HC in NJ.

No. What I'm saying is the Jets bad juju is WAY stronger than Mahomes abilities. If Mahomes goes to the Jets, he doesn't become Mahomes. He becomes Petty or Darnold or any other anonymous Jets qb since the dawn of time.

Just when I thought "bad juju" couldn't get any worse than a team with the worst winning percentage among all major sports franchises in the U.S., I've learned the Jets are so bad they'd ruin the QB with the most God give talent ever.

The more you know....

He said "in the U.S.," so you have to deduct all games they lost in Toronto, and something something move the goalposts....

Oops. The NOW 2nd most losing franchise in sports history. Yea that makes it better and totally lends credence to the Jets “bad juju”………Feel better, kiddo?

You’d have to “deduct” the games we lost in London as well if that’s the route you’re taking. But I think the T-Wolves record in Toronto is factored into that equation as is our London record. So I think NY is right here.
