Ready to have your mind blown? For the first time since Jason Sehorn in the late 90s, we will have a white corner in the NFL next year. Riley Moss is PFF's highest graded corner in CFB over the last two years, and he runs a 4.41. Projected 3rd-5th rounder.

Like everything else with our draft needs, it depends.

Carlton Davis is our undisputed CB1, but the rest of the CB room is bad. Both Dean and SMB are free agents, and while we can make moves to resign one of them I doubt we can find the money to resign both. After them, we have Zyon McCollum who looked outmatched as a rookie and a handful of street free agents.

If we make it a priority to get our guys back, corner becomes less of a need. But if we let those guys walk, corner suddenly leaps to the top imo. The same could be said for defensive line, linebacker, and safety.

By contrast, the offense looks decent at the moment as far as glaring roster holes, besides arguably at quarterback. That of course will likely change if/when we start cutting expensive contracts like Donovan Smith, Cam Brate, and Shaq Mason to name a few.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need everything. Like...literally*. Even where spots are filled, we need complimentary players. AWJR is a stud, but we don't have another safety under contract right now. Wirfs is a star, but who's the other tackle? Vea is a monster, but who's playing next to him? Evans and Godwin are awesome, but who the hell is our #3 receiver? And even if we re-sign Dean (SMB seems unlikely IMHO), who's the #3 corner who'll be on the field 60% of the time? McCollum? What happens when CD or Dean get hurt?

You catch my drift. I have unrelated reasons for not wanting a running back or a quarterback early. But "we don't need one" is not an argument I'm going to use against whoever we end up taking.

* - Not QUITE literally, since Jake Camarda is a stud and you only have one punter.

7 of our free agents are under 1 million.
10 are under 2 million.

Above that is LVD, 2DE's, a DT, WR, QB, and a TE.

I would say LB and 3 DL's are of major concern.

If all I ever did was punt the ball, I'm sure I would dabble around to see how good I could be kicking field goals.

This brings me to one Matt Araiza and would he consider.

Heck, even 2 P/K

Camarda and Araiza could make it a competition.

15 outta 20 sixty plus yard field goals??

One other thing, our entire defensive backfield has trouble tackling or gets hurt from it.

Did we even run one time between Mason and Wirfs?

Top BPA guys

Witherspoon- If this kid was 200lbs he'd be a top 5 pick. This is Denzel Ward model S. Fantastic coverage skills. Stays on the WRs hip deep, through traffic, off the line. We should run to the podium if he's somehow still there. Fantastic athlete. Press coverage god with superb instincts and speed.

Gonzales- Exactly the build you want at CB at 6'2 and a good 200lbs. It's insane how calmy he seems to accelerate. His issue is he seems to play soft at the point of the catch, where he can be more aggressive to prevent the catch. Can coach that up some. High understanding of the the game and leverages. Should also run up to the podium if he's there.

Ringo- Size and speed is all there how we like, 5 star guy. A high level competitive guy that just needs to improve the finer points of his game. Particularly his press, which is weak despite seemingly having the tools to be great at it. If you can develop him, he'll be a great CB.

Banks- Press man guy. 6'2, 205 like we like it. Doesn't have the grave digger ball skills we like but the coverages skills are there to follow a guy anywhere on the field or just shut down his sideline. Though he can baited at times.

I imagine Gonzales off the board first. Teams would be foolish to let Witherspoon fall but some have him doing just that. Ringo and Banks are 1st/2nd round border guys, who could be the guy at 19 or 53... heck maybe even the third. One thing ironically working against this class is that it's actually REALLY thick so teams could pass on CB early thinking they can still get a stud later.

IMHO the cornerback boards will be wildly different between teams this go-around, especially accounting for system fits. It's a very deep, talented group, and I could make a good case for at least 4 guys being CB1 and then another guy get drafted before all of them.

I would rather wait a bit with that in mind, and the same argument could be made for edge-rusher. There will be 1st round CBs and Edges in round 2, second round talents in round 3, etc. If we're not head-over-heels for one of those guys, hit a different position. I'd be looking harder at someone like Trenton Simpson, JSN, Branch, etc, for that reason.

We've double tapped on DBs before to great success. If we were ever to repeat it this would be the draft.

The least of the three is ranked higher than a Ohio State corner, I was waiting to see if I could find out more and maybe if they do a pro day. One has a degree in sociology so maybe he is going straight to a career.

I also was wondering if it was talented coaching.

Hard to say. That's why you like to see the small school guys play well against top competition.

Priority free agents - if they don't cut the mustard you tell them to go use the degree that DivI's never get.

After 10 CB's or so get picked and after 10 or so safeties get picked you throw the rest in a bowl and hope something good comes out of it.

Final Top 5 CB Rankings for 2023:

1) Devon Witherspoon, Illinois. If he was an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier, he'd be in that Peterson/Okudah/Ramsey discussion. As it is, he's going to be an even better Jaire Alexander.

2) Christian Gonzalez, Oregon. Just stick as hell (TWSS.) And with his NBA Small Forward wingspan and hops, he'll be a zone demon too.

3) Joey Porter Jr, Penn State. The best pure man cover corner in the class, and he plays the same kind of physical game as his dad.

4) Julius Brents, Kansas State. Huge Seahawks energy. Probably a tick slower than ideal but in a zone-heavy defense he'll be a monster.

5) Garrett Williams, Syracuse. Not the biggest or fastest corner, but just super reactive and instinctive.

So much of the position is instincts, and I don't see much evidence he has them.
