The players choose to do this, right? Sorry to end the discussion so abruptly.

They made a rule a few years back in minor league ball that prevented that shit after a Brooklyn vs Staten Island game. It was more aimed at ambidextrous pitchers, but it allows only one change per side per at bat.

Good memory. That’s when the ambidextrous pitcher and switch hitter faced off but couldn’t agree on the R/L arrangement iirc

I probably wouldn’t pay the reported asking price for Soto. He doesn’t provide any baserunning value and he’s a bad defender. So while the bat is pretty awesome, it caps his ceiling at like 7 WAR. Which has been his best season thus far. Now that’s a ton of value, but that’s high end projection. if you’re giving up a 3 WAR player and multiple elite prospects…You have him for 2.5 seasons then he ends up in LA or something.

I’d keep my elite prospects if it came to that. This isn’t prime Mike Trout.

Soto is 23 and still years away from his prime.

Prodigious MLB players typically peak at younger ages than traditional players. More like 22-25. Hall of Famers in general peak between 25-27 It's not a certainty, but it's a trend. Mike Trout's two best seasons were ages 20 and 21 when he stole 82 bases between those two seasons. Bryce Harper's best season - by far - was age 22. Pujols, age 23 (reportedly 23 y/o, anyway). Players more reliant on speed and defense will peak earlier, which makes sense because speed goes first.

If Soto is DHing, he's not providing any value in the field and he's already a net negative on the base paths. He's not getting faster or becoming a better fielder with age. it's possible he grows into 40+ HR production, which increases his value. It's also possible he doesn't and these are his peak years. If his peak is 25 and beyond, he'll be a free agent anyway.

Saw the reports that they’re entertaining offers. I’m honestly not sure how to evaluate him. Obviously he is an incredible talent. But if he plans on stopping pitching in the next year or two, what then? He has an alright eye at the plate and a ton of power. Decent speed. but seems like he’s be DHing full time. How does that age from 30-39? (If he’s extended)

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported how the Angels will keep Ohtani in Los Angeles despite the team’s struggles during the 2022 campaign. The Angels currently are 23 1/2 games back of the division leading Houston Astros in the American League West.

“Angels owner Arte Moreno is unwilling to let Ohtani leave, especially with the team’s two other stars — Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon — out with injuries,” Heyman wrote Monday.

The New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox were among teams to make offers for Ohtani in recent days, per Heyman. The Angels reportedly started entertaining talks for Ohtani on Thursday.

Imagine putting Rendon in the same sentence as Trout and Ohtani. Heyman is a useless fucking hack. Only time he's able to pass along any real news is when Scott Boras tells him to stop sucking his dick long enough to spread whatever it is Boras wants out there.

I’m not as high on Soto as most, but that return doesn’t make sense to me. I see lottery tickets in those Padres prospects…St Louis could’ve beat that offer without much difficulty. Very odd.

I'll wait until the deal is done done to check out the prospect writers I trust for their take on what SD gave up, but off the bat it doesn't seem to be a lot. Certainly not the franchise-crippling package I saw suggested from the Mets.

If they're close, it might not be too bad. But Machado has an opt out (I think after next year). So it could get dicey.

SD gave up a projected 2.2 WAR starter, a 2.5 WAR SS, and a 1.5 WAR outfielder…

RIP Vin Scully!

I only listened to him at the tail end of his career but man oh man was he good. The vibe of the game changed with him. A one-man crew. Magnificent. Made guys like Joe Buck look like high school amateurs.

Any Braves fans out there blaming replay or "only" getting infield hits, or (until yesterday) grasping onto "at least we've scored more runs than them" this morning?

I don't have words for how blindingly pissed off I'd be if I was a Padres fan. They pulled off a coup to get Soto (I feel like the Dodgers would have found some way to get him were it not the Padres) and now their franchise centerpiece pisses dirty. I can't imagine Soto is any happier. Guy just wants to win. Like, THIS was supposed to be the year the Padres just got into the playoffs, said "fuck the world" and just beat whoever was on the schedule in the playoffs. As a neutral I ask, "How exactly is a team that needs to take another step going to do it now under these circumstances?"

They better give Soto a blank check and say "We'll try again next year"

Edit: unless of course you wanna do arbitration
