I don't know how Arteta still has a job with the Gunners. Holy shit man. Did the FA Cup really buy that much goodwill?

US plays the last of their WC qualifying games of this round tonight at Honduras
We need this one badly. But Honduras will probably pack it in and it will be 0-0

Re: Soccer Thread
Ok, that half was better. Robinson and Acosta set the tone and attitude
I used to hate Acosta because he is often an offensive liability but the dude brings it every game and is the only “tough” guy we have in the front six. A less talented Jermaine Jones, he was a great spark today

Re: Soccer Thread
Really?
Despite playing 4 or so years less, he's almost equal in all stats and seems to be better with advanced stats such as goals responsible for.
When he went to PSG Messi had 36 more goals responsible for than any other player in any league in the world. I believe that is goals, assist, and double teams/taking away a player that leads to a goal.
Unless Messi retires early, it seems he'll end with every record there is.

Yep. CR7 was always a better all around player.

I'm not arguing.
I don't watch enough to argue, but it seems Messi is widely considered the better offensive player. Is CR7 that good at defense?

I think CR7 provided more defensively (particularly when they were younger) and through midfield. His game was more well rounded too - that’s why he succeeded in so many different leagues. Don’t get me wrong I think Messi is fantastic and would have succeeded in say England but not to the same degree that CR7 did.

Messi’s first touch is better than Ronaldo’s first touch though…

Re: Soccer Thread
Messi won his record 7th Ballon d'or today.
He set a record for chances created since the stat has been tracked(not sure how long that's been).
Stats of the top 3 finalist:
edit: He already had the record.
Most Balloon d'or
Messi- 7 (5 2nd place and 1 3rd place)
Ronaldo-5 (6 2nd place and 1 3rd place)
No one else has more than 3 since it started in 1956.
Basically just these two for the last 12 years getting 1st and 2nd outside of 1 year. Pretty crazy.
Ronaldo was 6th this year.

Messi won it when they won the Copa America it seems.
He also lead in pretty much every stat outside of goals scored and "big chances received", but I understand stats aren't everything. Especially when they play in different leagues.
All year I've heard his "chances created" were crazy and maybe it's just the one point Messi defenders speak to, but he had more than double over Lewa.

I would have voted for the Polack but either is a good choice.
Re: Soccer Thread
Losing 2 nil to Canada is even worsened by a coach saying they dominated and he’s happy with the performance.

Watched the Senegal v Egypt AFCON final yesterday at a soccer bar in Fells Point (Maryland), actually with a couple guys from Senegal. Their excitement was contagious.

Re: Soccer Thread
So we get England, Iran and one of Wales/Scotland/Ukraine
If we do get out of the group we will have one of: Netherlands, Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal
All things considered that ain’t a bad draw

Re: Soccer Thread
We could run the table. England’s obviously are toughest foe, and we should be tested well against their elite given our elite play in the Premier League too.
We just need to be healthy.
I’m grabbing two jerseys for the event. I haven’t been hyped for a US event since 2014, I’m celebrating like the Bucs winning the Superbowl for me. Pulisic and Reyna are my obvious choices.

I, too, was confused until I realized he was saying that many of the USA's best players play in the Premier League. Which I'm not sure is even true outside of Pulisic.
Edit: I guess Steffen is the backup for City.

There's Josh Sargent, too, but does Norwich City really count?

The answer to that question is no, and neither does Josh Sargent.nybf wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 11:42 amAh, OK.... But yeah....The Outsider wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 7:51 am

So Budweiser is a huge FIFA sponsor. And Qatar just outlawed with "non-negotiable" terms all alcohol in and around any event.
Smooth move.
