The Current Meta Suffocating NFL Offenses

Post by Primeminister »

No clue where to post this so here is a thread. I enjoyed watching this breakdown of how defenses have adjusted to beat the modern passing offense. The video is patiently done explaining the concepts so the average fan can understand what we are seeing.

You hear that noise?

It's the NFL scrambling to change more rules to neuter NFL defenses and prop up offenses as a response to this.

Yea, because what's #1 on the list of things the league will probably ban this offseason?

Really great stuff. The concepts therein + strategic light boxes w/ activatable Safeties/overhang defenders + the current approach to "hack human perception systems" with prolific downfield, questionably impeding/disrupting, contact (if everything looks like Illegal Contact or Defensive Holding then nothing...or very little...looks like Illegal Contact or Defensive Holding) is relatively suffocating offenses the last two years. We'll see how offensive adjustments (including personnel groupings and run % increases, particularly situationally on 3rd and medium to set up 4th and 1/2...which we're already seeing) and "we're stressing these rules this year" from The League Office changes things in league year 2024.

Thinking Football is so good. I would recommend everyone stay on top of their uploads.

EDIT - My thoughts are that I would like to see the following played with to deal with the current defense meta:

* More 4 x 1 (instead of the 3 x 2 which plays right into Split-Coverage dynamics) with late, jet motion into the 4 x 1 to prevent defenses from checking. Kill them concept side on the quad with overload/flood or kill them with a route-running savant on the single.

* Following from the above, more run checks from the look above, away from the overhang/activatable DB side where you have a numerical advantage...ESPECIALLY Gap runs where you can get an extra Guard over there.

* More running the football on 3rd and 3/4 to either (a) get the first down against a light box or (b) set up 4th and 1 (ish) and go for it.

* Following from the above, more QB Gap runs in the exact same scenario (which can also be Wildcat with immediate snap upon set).

Great stuff.

Should I point out who has the worst pass defense in the NFL or do we all already know?

I figured it would ban the Rugby scrum that the Eagles started... Lots of potential for injuries there.

That's because they weren't recording in high def in 2002

https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/12/14/roger ... rop-tackle

“NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL is ready to ban the controversial hip-drop tackle, which has caused several injuries this season, including one to Ravens star tight end Mark Andrews, and this past Sunday to Dolphins star Tyreek Hill.

“We all should work to get that out of the game,” Goodell said at a press conference from league ownership meetings on Wednesday. “You see it escalated the number of times it occurred this season. The [potential] injury can be very devastating. We saw that also. It’s not just happening at the NFL level. It’s happening at other levels. It’s something that I feel we’ve got to work very hard to get that removed this spring.”

A couple things mentioned in the video is that 1 you need a good pass rush to get to the QB, and 2 you need speed by the DB's to cover their assigned tasks. The Bucs pass rush has for the most, been a disappointment. The Bucs DB's have been slow to react.

Probably. The game is inherently violent. Yet they continue to give referees a chance to fuck up the game.

I don't think it's just me being old when I say this could ruin the game, and I fully expect them to back off of this if/when they realize how much of a clusterfuck this penalty is gonna be. I expect they'll change their minds before the preseason is over.

Ironically scoring has been trending downward in recent years.

Reaction is a bit dramatic now but that's expected because the decision is so fresh. Once emotions calm, people will suddenly realize that hip drops aren't the ONLY way that defenders have tackled previously.

Oh cool, another vague penalty that can be used to completely change the outcome of games.

Totally not just another tool for game manipulation in order to sway outcomes and gambling.

The rule change was made despite objections from the NFL Players Association. Before the committee gathered to vote this week, the NFLPA released a statement condemning it as confusing for everybody involved. From Wednesday of last week:

"The players oppose any attempt by the NFL to implement a rule prohibiting the 'swivel hip-drop' tackle. While the NFLPA remains committed to improvements in our game with health and safety in mind, we cannot support a rule change that causes confusion for us as players, for coaches, for officials and especially, for fans."

The officials are already confused about the bullshit hip drop ban:

This is the perfect type of rule addition that will allow the league greater control over outcomes.

How much y'all wanna bet the Chiefs will be penalized the least for hip drops while coincidentally their opponents will have single game highs for penalty yards?

Garbage. College football has an opportunity to be the sane pro football option. Just break away from the NCAA and let’s get the party started.

Looks like the intention at the moment is to deal with the issue early with more fines than penalties.
