Lets take the hottest GM in the game, Howie Roseman.
Drafted Wentz with a top pick, drafted Hurts with a second rounder 4 years later, then 2 years later tries to trade a bunch of picks away for Russell Wilson.
How expertly expert is Howie really?
I would say he’s an expert for sure. Carson Wentz’s injury history robbed him of a lot of ability.

Do the best bankers and smartest people end up at the senior positions at Goldman Sachs and running the biggest hedge funds?
I think we all would agree that is typically not the case. A lot of - if not most - industries run on their own momentum and channels of nepotism.
The NFL is no different.
Fuck no. The most handsome (beautiful) charming suck-ups normally get those positions. Anyone with actual talent is forced to work for them. It is the way of things until we have another revolution.

@Bootz didn't you say that if a team is paying a QB a ton of money, they shouldn't draft a QB with a high 1st rounder (like I'm suggesting NYG do this upcoming draft)? Seemed to workout for the Eagles, huh?
Who was drafted by the Eagles in the 1st when they were paying a QB a ton of money?

His trades have swung their competitive pendulum. That and a seemingly home run coaching hire.
But, to your point, all these guys whiff in the draft. They just released Derek Barnett too.
@Nobody has made some incredible calls over the years though in his prospect analysis. Who knows what you even consider a great “hit” percentage though in this business? 1st round seems like 50% and from there it just goes down.
Seems like strategy and/or consistent process is more important. Knowing when your competitive window is open and capitalizing.
See I would also say Howie is expertly expert, but not for some incredibly expert ability to pluck a QB from a draft class with some superb expert analysis, but for setting up an environment conducive for letting a QB emerge. In this case, yes, that meant using a second rounder on a QB the year after handing the other guy a 4 year $128M deal. It means taking RG3 and Kirk in the same class. It means drafting Love when you have Rodgers, Rodgers when you have Farve, Wilson when you just paid Matt Flynn.
Again, it makes idealist heads explode, but an expert GM isn't one with a holy scouting eye, but one that knows it's foolish to rely on such things and instead smartly hedges their bets in such a way that at least one manages to hit.
Taking a QB later in the draft when you already have one is smart. Cheap service with upside for a multiple years. Otherwise you're maying millions/year for a guy that likely never sees the field.

Assuming you use them that way.
You get them to see if they will be and upgrade eventually. They are projects. In the short-term sure, a backup. But it is a smart way to play it. Belichick drafts one nearly every other year for that reason. Unfortunately he doesn't want a dual threat QB, same as Arians didn't

I was being facetious. We drafted Trask in the second round then proceeded to pay Gabbert to backup Brady for two years. Then, when it was time for a rebuilding year we brought in Mayfield.
@Doctor … I don’t know about Belichick, but history definitely suggests Arians wanted nothing to do with a “dual threat” QB.
You make it seem like the league was all duel threatening around and Arians was the sole hold out. I think it was just more the things he did want in a QB he found in guys who happen to be stiff. Doesn't mean stiffness was one of the things he was looking for.
"I don't want my QB to run often, but when he does I want to make sure he moves extra slow"

I didn't make anything seem like anything. I'll put it differently. When Bruce Arians is evaluating QB play their ability to run is low on his list of meaningful tangible attributes. And, it doesn't matter. Nobody cares.
One of the Google articles that popped in my feed came out for the mock had Caleb dropping out of the top 5 to us. We have to retain the 6th but Caleeb dropping due to his attitude.

I don't expect Williams, Maye, or even Daniels now to drop out of the top 5. If the Bears have two picks inside the top 5 and Arizona has another they will almost certainly be trading out if they plan on keeping their current QBs. If we're at 6 maybe Daniels gets there if he is small at the combine.

Guys, what are we talking about here?
Caleb Williams lost to every ranked team on his schedule. Padding stats versus San Jose State doesn't impress me.
I mean, yes, but I don’t think you can objectively say with a straight face those losses are his fault. The TDs your offense scores are worth the same amount of points the defense gives up.
He had to be perfect every series for them to win.
