2023 -2024 tankathon
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I’m the guy who said Jayden Daniels could win a Heisman during training camp when he was a true freshman at Arizona State. Before Brian Kelly knew who he was.
Caleb Williams looks better to me as an NFL prospect.
I’ve been wrong before though.

Dude, I gave you credit. I was wrong about Daniels.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I haven't seen a prospect lacking substance as much as Caleb Williams in a very long time. Congrats you scored like 6 TD's a game against unranked dog shit and you think you're some kind of prodigy who can make a list of where he should go. Christ and I thought Cam Newton was conceited. I mean go ahead and take him #1. He hasn't proven anything to me but that he can run up a scoreboard and that he is an exceptional, world caliber athlete. Nothing more. He folded like a lawn chair against any actual competition he faced.

We currently sit at 20 because we decided to sign baker mayfield
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Y'all remember all those "We are going from Brady to Baker" posts?
We're putting up more points so far this year...

It's amazing what getting rid of Byron Sandwich will do to a team.

We'll see how he does with the Steelers if he's hired.

Even though there are Bakers haters here who oppose Baker Mayfield.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
The most important part of the story is still left to be played out.
You have the final quarter of the season. The runway for the learning curve, at least for this season, has run out. Now it's time to show who you are going to be going into the final stretch. Are we running the ball well? Are we communicating? Are we getting those takeaways? Are we connecting with Godwin?
These next four (five?) games are the real Baker Franchise Tag test.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
There’s nothing Baker Mayfield can do the next four weeks to earn the franchise tag, short of the invention of superhuman serum. We have five years of data. Don’t fall for the banana in the tailpipe.
The franchise tag would put him at something like $35m a season.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
You don't think a playoff win earns him a second year?
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Who would be your top three first picks for us using tank a thon I guess?
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Snake is a well known hater of Mayfield. There's nothing further to discuss with him.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Baker needs to be better in the facets he can control. Like I'm not done with him but if the dude overthrows another open player by 5 yards again I'm gonna be that much closer. There's no excuse for this for anyone at this point in their career and this deep into a season
It's the NFL. Be better. I understand stuff like that happening a handful of times a year. This is happening a handful of times PER GAME.

Truth. They go 4-0 the next four weeks he’s probably getting a full blown extension.Snake wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 6:18 pm There’s nothing Baker Mayfield can do the next four weeks to earn the franchise tag, short of the invention of superhuman serum. Baker proved he can flirt with being very good, IF…
1. Elite running game
2. Elite offensive line
Why would we pay this person so much money? All else being *equal*, he’s average at best.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Daniel Jones got a contract extension. Geno Smith did too and he didn't even win a game in the playoffs. Baker would 100% be re-signed if we make the playoffs. Long term and expensive if we win a game

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Baker is tied for 14th in the NFL for passing yards with Lamar Jackson. Tied for 9th with Justin Herbert, 17th in passer rating, and he does a decent job of protecting the football with only 8 interceptions thus far.
He's not the best player in the world, but he ain't the worst. If he has a strong last quarter of the season and leads this team to the playoffs, I absolutely could see him getting an extension. Not sure I'd agree with that, but such is life.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
That's true. However, if he led the game-winning drive for each of the next eight weeks, then yes he'd get the franchise tag. And not one person here would begrudge him then.Snake wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 6:18 pm There’s nothing Baker Mayfield can do the next four weeks to earn the franchise tag, short of the invention of superhuman serum. Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I wonder how Tom Brady will do on this new offense this year. I doubt he'll be better than Mayfield.

You’re not wrong. I’d feel differently if he were making $40M instead of $4M.Snake wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:10 pmThat would be dumb.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:07 pm

He is 39th amongst QBs in AAV this year.
Drafting a QB and having them on their rookie deal while getting at least similar results with the potential for higher upside would be ideal.
I wonder if GMs/owners will be more hesitant in the future to give average QBs (big) contracts. Jones, Tannehill, JG, Carr, Goff, etc.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
But, in our hypothetical here… If he goes 4-0 in the next four games and wins or at least plays well in a playoff game? He’d have finished the season 6-0. I don’t see how you couldn’t extend him.
Being realistic though I don’t imagine anyone expects that scenario to play out.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
The answer to that is no. GMs/owners will always pay for a QB 1 way or another. As we should all know by now but pretend not to, QB skill doesn't guarantee winning. Daniel Jones, Jimmy G, Goff all have won playoff games. Jimmy G & Goff have been to the Superbowl.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:04 amYou’re not wrong. Meanwhile guys like Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert have losing records as starters and have yet to won a playoff game. But they were "good enough" to at 1 point sign the largest contracts for QBs at the time.
It's tough navigating that QB landscape of "do I draft or do I pay" if you're a team.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Hence the reason @Snake brought up tagging him. That would give him his 2nd year without tying up money in future salary caps.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
That's what I'm getting at. I wonder if we're learning that they'll always pay up or it's more of a reflection of the options? For example, the last couple drafts haven't been great for QB prospects at least from a depth perspective. Did that lead, at least in part, to teams signing guys like JG and Carr to fairly large free agent deals without much track record of success? Jones to an extension? Baker is as good or better than those guys.Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:58 amThe answer to that is no. GMs/owners will always pay for a QB 1 way or another. I wonder if we'll see something similar this off-season with a different level of QB depth expected in the next two drafts? Does Kirk Cousins get a mega-deal similar to Carr/JG? Probably, but he shouldn't. Baker? I guess we'll see how these last 4 games play out. Jameis and Tannehill have been starters. Are they likely to only get backup level contracts at best? Probably. Why Cousins will get $100M+ for the same results is beyond me.
I don't get the mentality of it though. You have enough of a track record to know you can't truly "win" with these guys. At least not consistently.
Seems like competent QB plays is so rare teams will pay out the nose for it just so they don't get their brains beat in every week.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
How many other NFL teams would jump at the chance at signing Mayfield to a FA contract? How much is he worth on the open market?
