Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Just a Tuesday morning question. Your criteria are as good as mine.

Depends on criteria. Statistical production, playoff performance, and overall body of work it’s hard to argue against Jerry Rice.
If I’m starting a team and I know I get their prime years? I’m taking Calvin Johnson.

My 80 year old dad: “Steve Largent”
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Jerry Rice is the greatest player in NFL history. Excellent off the bat, in his prime, in old age, on multiple teams, and so far ahead of his peers statistically that it ain't even funny.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Jerry Rice will likely never be topped.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Jerry Rice followed by Larry Fitzgerald...
Mike Evans has been a consistent receiver for most of his career. I would love to put him in that category, but he does not seem to be that game breaking dude.

I’d love to hear you say more about Fitzgerald. Great player.

I'll just go with the 5 best I've had the privilege to watch:
1. Jerry Rice
2. Randy Moss
3. Calvin Johnson
4. Larry Fitzgerald
5. Antonio Brown

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
For me it's between Moss and Rice.
The argument for Rice comes down to his longevity, numbers, and consistency. The argument against is that he had two HoF QBs and probably the best offensive coach in history.
My argument for Moss is that he was like the equivalent of a nuke on the field. Dangerous to blow a game wide open at any moment (see Dallas). He also only had a HoF QB for a few years in Brady and he lit it up with like 23 TDs and almost went undefeated. Had Culpepper not blown his knee up I think he might have had a HoF career.
Moss to me is the most fearsome WR to match up with in history. Rice had a better career though.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Of all the GOAT questions this one is probably the least disputed.
And yes, it's Jerry Rice.
Now you want to make it interesting break it up into eras. Or just exclude Rice.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
So much to say about Fitzgerald. For me it boils down to him being great on a bad team. He could take over a game making circus catches that other receivers would drop. He rarely dropped passes that were easy. That, to me, is why he is a cut above Mike Evans. Mike will be very consistent, but even he will drop passes that should be caught from time to time. Larry just never seemed to do that. Loved the dude at Penn State. Loved the dude in the NFL.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Bullshit. This has never happened. Ever. I dare you to show me proof of Mike dropping one single catchable ball. I'm skipping over the double dare and double dog dare, and I TRIPLE dog dare you.

Random thought within this discussion. But I really wish Calvin decided to be the “bad guy” and demand a trade out of Detroit instead of retire early. Especially with how the Lions did him dirty after he retired. I wish we could have seen him on an actual NFL team and what his final career numbers could have been if he didn’t retire young.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Apparently that's a thing in Detroit as Barry Sanders did the same thing... retired with gas left in the tank. Can't blame him for wanting to enjoy the fruits of his labor somewhere far away from Detroit. The weather is really bad, the people are nasty, and if you play for the Lions, you're playing on Thanksgiving every year instead of enjoying it at home with your family.Miller4Prez64 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 3:06 pm Random thought within this discussion. As right now.. Jerry Rice
Justin Jefferson after he retire
Justin Jefferson after he retire
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
JJets has the best chance to catch him since Randy Moss.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Not to sound like an old man, but Rice was putting up crazy stats when it wasn’t a pass happy league and CBs could actually defend.
7 seasons of 1300+ yards from 1986 to 1995 is just insane.
I love as born in 1988, so the WR I feared the most was Megatron, but Rice is no doubt the GOAT and it ain’t close.
If Rice is Michael Jordan, Calvin is 6th man if the year
Rice was a 10 time first team all pro, and that came in an 11 season stretch.
His age 24 season he slashed 86/1570/15
16 seasons later he put up 92/1211/7

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
I'm not taking away Jerry Rice's flowers. But the only guy to ever make me say "Holy shit are you kidding me" more than Randy Moss was Kenyatta Walker. One was sheer dominance vs everyone he came against. The other was dumbassery that needs no explanation to anyone else here
It just depends on how you want to look at it in consistency vs talent. Moss would have still done VERY well for himself in Rice's day

33 y/o Moss burning prime Revis so badly that Revis faked a hamstring…is crazy. These Are The Days wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 9:02 pm I'm not taking away Jerry Rice's flowers. I’m not sure any WR broke/bent defenses more than Moss.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Megatron is the most dominant receiver ever imo. The only reason he's not the universal GOAT at wr is because he wasted his entire career on the Lions.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
I have to agree: It WAS always entertaining to see Moss put his hand up when the corner was right there on him. Because..... well.... the corner may have been right there on him, but Moss knew the corner wasn't actually covering him. Just throw the ball.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Yea that's why Barry Sanders isn't considered the GOAT either.....Oh wait...BucsNBills wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 9:27 pm Megatron is the most dominant receiver ever imo. The only reason he's not the universal GOAT at wr is because he wasted his entire career on the Lions.
Most hated man in America.
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
It’s been like 16 years. I still vividly remember watching grainy Calvin Johnson highlights from Georgia Tech. I also remember watching the combine and struggling to fathom his insane athleticism.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 9:27 pm Megatron is the most dominant receiver ever imo. the greatest WR prospect ever. I don’t believe a human, as presently constructed, can be better designed to be a WR.
aaaand he went 2. aaaaaand Joe Thomas went 3. Damn coin flip.
Hurt on draft day then. Still hurts now.

Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
The best WR I've ever seen was Randy Moss. There isn't a close second
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
For me, it was a toss up between Rice and Moss. I ultimately have decided to go with Rice because he averaged more yards per season than Moss (1,090.23 Rice vs 955.75 Moss) with TD's almost dead even (9.38 Rice vs 9.75 Moss).
Don't tread on me
Re: Who is the greatest/best WR of all time?
Was there a better duo than Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison
