I wouldn't call it weird as much as I'd say it was innovative. It accomplished 2 goals: Got Mahomes his money and security. Allowed KC the chance to plan ahead into the future. Neither side has to worry about being without the other. If you look at how this deal is structured it makes it nearly impossible for the Chiefs to cut him before he turns 36. Each year fully guarantees 1-2 years in advance except for 2031, which guarantees on the 5th day of that league year.
