Are you saying that's a negative? I'd take Cam Newton's career over a Hell of a lot of other QBs taken #1 overall. RoY, AP MVP, multiple playoff berths, a Super Bowl berth. He was dominant in his prime.
Somewhat. He used to play for Indiana University. I watched some of his BiG Ten games. he’s average at best. If I had a gun to my head and was told to choose between Penix and Sanders. Sanders

We’ll see

Cam was a beast but at his core he was still a "good times" QB.

At this point they're probably going to let Caleb pick his own HC.

These running back QBs are busting at a 4:1 rate. Please can we not?

Don't draft a QB because he runs well, like Vick or Newton.

And no, Caleb while elusive is not a running back QB. He's a QB that can move, ala Mahomes

Penix has been in college for 6 years?! Yikes. He's a much better passer than Newton or Vick though. 65% career and 75% so far this year. Vick and Anthony Richardson mind you were just over 50% passers even in college. Newton's one year at Auburn he was 65%, but he wasn't making "NFL throws."

Caleb is in another stratosphere.

I think at some point everyone is going to look at this guy and go "whoa".

He hasn't hit a national tipping point yet.

Go Huskies. I wanna see this one coming.

What league are you watching? 4:1 is probably the rate of starting QBs that can run vs QBs that can't these days.

Penix reminded me of Michael Vick standing in the pocket but I'm not ready to make that a hot take due to both men being black, similar ht/wt, and left handed.

I'll keep watching and see. My wife is from Washington so I watch the huskies every year.

Kids good tho. Real strong and if you take his helmet off he looks like Barack Obama

Right now I’d say Interior OL, FS, LB and RB are our biggest needs. Luckily these aren’t premium positions to find good talent in the throughout the draft.

Maybe I’m homer but I believe JJ McCarthy has the potential to be the best QB in the draft.

Tell me about it. It's all I can do to not make a pure Michigan mock:

1st - JJ McCarthy, QB
2nd - Blake Corum, RB
3rd - Zak Zinter, OG
4th - Mikey Sainristil, S

I could go on but our resident non-Michigan folks would want to choke me.

Anyways, back to McCarthy. I think he has translatable pro traits. Basically everything Shea Patterson was supposed to be but better.

Basically our 4 biggest needs currently. Value from each position. That's a home run draft. Who cares if they're all from Michigan? When was the last time we drafted someone from Michigan anyway? Maurice Stovall in Gruden's first draft? We're due.

QB time. Don’t mock anything else in the first round. Someone with a ton of talent will be there. We won’t be getting first or second choice though.

On the bright side, this is a pretty good situation for a young QB to walk into. Get some Oline help and an offensive minded HC in to coach him up. And we move into a much more exciting future.

We're picking in the top 10 now. I'm not confident about winning any of our remaining games so I look for that pick to continue rising in value.

Bucs will have to trade up to get QB they want in draft. ( Penix Jr.) or to stay put and draft Jaylen Daniels?

Per Tankathon, if the season ended today we would pick #8 overall. That's a decent spot, and I fear that we will be drafting higher unfortunately.

Assuming a new head coach and GM, a quarterback is the obvious pick. But there's such a depth at the position this season that I would feel reticent to give up a ton of draft capital to move up for a guy. As a reminder, the Panthers moved from #9 to #1 last year, and it cost them a good starter (DJ Moore), plus their first two picks of the draft, their first the next draft, and their second the draft afterwards. That's too much, imo, and I think the next regime will need all the young and inexpensive depth they can find while we turn this team around.

Look at the tankathon draft list today. At least five teams ahead of the Buccaneers would be open to taking a top ranked quarterback. I understand it’s supposed to be a historically strong draft at quarterback, but still…

McCarthy. If we can't have Williams or Maye, IMHO he's far and away the 3rd best QB in the class (and IMHO, closer to those guys than the group that follows.)

I was talking about Penix last year, but as a 2nd-3rd Rounder with some upside. Now that it'd take our first, I'll pass. So much of his production is just due to a good scheme and great targets. In that sense he reminds me of Hendon Hooker last year. So many of these plays he's making will not be there at the next level.

Go back to the tape of the Oregon @ Washington game this year and I think you'll come away feeling better about both Penix and Nix who have a lot of experience between them and are good prospects.

I haven't seen McCarthy yet but I'll defer to Harbaugh at first glance.

Sigh. Time to start thinking draft huh.. My first thought is Keon Coleman or Bowers considering we’re probably losing Evans and I doubt we pick top 5 but it looks like it could be top 10. This offense needs a dominant weapon so desperately and those guys would be it.

Dabble into that QB depth later in the draft instead of taking the 3rd or 4th best option in the 1st. You still have Trask on the roster under contract next year.

Grab Bo Nix. He’s got a higher floor than Trask’s ceiling, and it’s not particularly close.

Ankle injury and back running this week.

He’s not just a TE either. He’s probably a top 3 player in the draft.

Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles Rams, Arizona, Green Bay and Bucs? Sounds about right. If we can’t land top 3 QB, Kirk Cousins?

Here’s pff ranking for 2024 qb class

Here is what ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller said about Tampa Bay potentially selecting Maye:

If the Buccaneers are selecting in the top five next April, neither Baker Mayfield nor Kyle Trask did enough to cement the QB1 job long term. Given the low investment made in both of them, it stands to reason Tampa Bay would move on if given the chance to draft a premier prospect. Maye is built like Justin Herbert at 6-4 and 230 pounds and has high-end downfield passing ability and pocket mobility. He broke out in his first season as a starter for the Tar Heels in 2022, throwing 38 touchdown passes to seven interceptions.

Unless we’re trading up we won’t be getting Maye. We still have a few more wins in us this year.
