Welcome Baker Mayfield

Post by Phantom »

Former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per sources. Mayfield is now in line to be Tom Brady’s successor.

My hope is either he or Trask balls out, or suck enough for us to get a top pick. Anything in between would put us in purgatory

Optimistic outlook: Canales helped lead Geno Smith to Comeback Player of the Year. Baker is a better QB than Geno Smith.

I think this was our best veteran QB option. Cheap with some upside, and he’s likely going to boom or bust. If he does poorly then you let Trask try and probably end up with a high pick, if he gets things right and has a good year then maybe we have a solid QB. I prefer it to Brissett who is guaranteed to be solid, but not good enough.

Where's @Doctor to tell all why this is actually a good move and we shouldn't be upset about this latest idiotic move by the Buc's front office?

I like the salary, length, and competition. I think talent wise he's actually better than Carr.

@MJW, welp...here we go. We're gonna win just enough games to push us out of a top 10 pick next year. What do you think? Like 5-12 or 6-11?

Y'all ready to win just enough games to miss out on Caleb Williams but too few to be competitive or relevant? Yeah, me either!!

He’ll start week 1.

And his player profile doesn’t exactly fit this new OC’s offense right?

Exactly. Stupid signing.

We will never accomplish anything with Baker at the helm but may win one or two extra games assuming Trask is truly a bust. If Baker starts over Trask I'll be pretty discouraged about the next few years of this team.

The only good scenarios right now are A. Trask beats out Baker, exceeds expectations and gives us hope for the future. B. Baker wins the battle (meaning Trask sucks) but plays even worse than he has and we win minimal games in 2023, snag Caleb in 2024.

Baker was 2-8 last year between two different teams. Even with Sean McVay, an acknowledged offensive guru, Baker actively regressed throughout his time in LA.

But we needed a veteran for competition, so I shouldn't complain too much. And who knows, Canales turned around Geno's career, maybe he could do the same with Baker. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

I say let the best man win in training camp. I hope it's Trask, because Baker has seemingly already peaked.

Even if Trask becomes the guy, he isn't the guy yet. We can't and shouldn't just hand him the starting job with no one else in the QB room with him.

Clearly he needs more time. He's only 25, only has 2 years be #3 QB experience. It's not like he went to a D1 school or an SEC school even. And it's not as if he was a Heisman finalist.

He so clearly needs more time.

It was never going to be Trask and a rookie and Mayfield isn't costing much, relatively speaking, so this would be expected as far as signing a vet option.

This is why I don’t get the freaking out about Mayfield winning us more games. He’s not been trending that way lately. Jacoby Brissett is the QB that would play solid, conservative football and keep our team stuck in the middle. Baker is boom or bust. Definitely more likely to bust, but if he figures some things out and plays well in our system then that’s not necessarily a bad thing either.

I personally think he goes the way of Leftwich the QB when he came here in 2009, probably starts and gets benched at some point, but I definitely prefer this to signing Brissett, Garoppolo, Dalton, Darnold, etc.

That was actually my response to the post above it wondering what Evans & Godwin thought of the signing. But, I guess it works for the OP as well. :D
