It would be the ultimate “fuck you” to the 13 or so organizations that passed him over.

It'd be hilarious if Chiefs went a different direction for HC
Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
I'm sure the Chiefs wouldn't just hand the Coordinator the HC job without proper interviews and due process just because the former coach tells them to. Can you imagine an organization so gutless and shitty they'd do something like that?

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Wait are we now going to act like a DC with a top defense in multiple years and a crushing Super Bowl victory over the dynasty of the 20's was somehow NOT going to be the front runner? Oh boy.

1. The Chiefs offense went into that game with hands tied behind their back. The defenses were good. But context is important.
2. There’s plenty of examples of good to great coordinators not translating to good to great HC. It’s a totally different job.

What Phantom posted is kind of misleading.uscbucsfan1 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 12:30 pmMaybe not. For all we know he goes there and signs a new deal.
He informed the Raiders he’s not accepting a trade anywhere, which is smart on his part. You don’t want to take resources away from whatever team you ultimately sign with. The Saints very well could’ve told him “Hey, we want you. But tell Vegas you’re not accepting a trade anywhere so they are forced to cut you”. If I’m in the Saints FO that’s exactly what I tell him honestly.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Exaclty. If you're confident you're the team, have him be a FA and you can do a contract more custom to your needs.
The only reason to trade would be to keep him off the market for fear of losing him to another. Which could happen.
Even if they love him, it could simply be contract

What’s crazy is Andy Reid earned the right to do that more than Arians did, but probably would never ask the Chiefs to do anything like that.

The Broncos interviewed former Jets, Bills’ head coach Rex Ryan for their defensive coordinator job, per Jay Glazer].
Ryan, 60, has emerged as a “surprise candidate” for the Broncos’ DC vacancy, per Jay Glazer].

Agreed. I imagine the conversation went something like...uscbucsfan1 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 12:30 pmMaybe not. For all we know he goes there and signs a new deal.
Carr: "That was a great tour. Love your team and facility, and the fact that there's no real QBs in this division means I think we can win here. And that fat contract we sketched out wasn't bad either. Let's get it done."
Saints: "Sounds great. We just need to send the Raiders a third round pick for you."
Carr: "... Or we could just keep that third rounder, use it draft me another receiver or something, and I'll sign with you guys in a few weeks. Seriously, fuck the Raiders, give them nothing."
Saints: "Capital idea."

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Exactly. He'd understand he has no place in that discussion, beyond offering his endorsement. And ownership would have no interest in his feelings, beyond however much weight they put behind that endorsement.Miller4Prez64 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 3:49 pmWhat’s crazy is Andy Reid earned the right to do that more than Arians did, but probably would never ask the Chiefs to do anything like that.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Yeah, there was no downside in the Raiders letting him do that - they literally had no leverage. But that was basically the only question the visit could answer: did Carr like it there for when he got released? It's best to imagine the Raiders simply let him do that to be classy, even though that's not really how they operate.Cheb wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 12:44 amAgreed. In any case, the Saints making Derek Carr their guy is a very good thing in Tampa. It keeps them from trying to find an actual franchise quarterback for a few years.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Back to what @Snake said a few weeks back, I'd love to know the hiring process and what they are looking for. 2021 is the only standout type year for Steichen and it only took an All-Star cast on offense. Most of his coaching experience comes as either a quality control coach or a defensive assistant. Maybe the Colts are hoping for some Sirianni type magic? Idk man.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
I guess it’s better than Saturday as HC. Colts defense wasn’t too bad last year (other than the Vikings game collapse). If they can be a middle of the road offense next year with a new HC, rookie QB they could be a competitive team in short order.
Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
This has Lamar Jackson written all over it. He can finally play in an offense that will allow him to do more as a passer. Very smart hire by the Ravens. Now they need to get some WRs. They have like 38 RBs.

As expectedBreaking: The Las Vegas Raiders officially informed Derek Carr that he has been released, a source told Adam Schefter.
The team released him before $40.4M in his contract became guaranteed today.
Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
I gotta feeling the Eagles will be imploding.
Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
I don't. If anything, I'd think they'd be chomping at the bit to try and get even for this SB loss.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Take it with a grain of salt, Eagles fans believe their coordinators were pretty overrated. Sirianni was pretty much the architect of their offense and called plays up until this year. And Gannon had a full cupboard on defense. A defense that has had a lot of the same pieces for years before he even got there.
I don't see them imploding.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
Agree. If you know your coaches, they have a lot of talent on that staff. This situation will resemble New England's during the Dynasty. Doesn't mean Steichen and Gannon will fail. But the Eagles should be able to promote from within and be just fine. I predict we'll see Brian Johnson on offense and Dennard Wilson on defense, based on their resumes.Bootz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 4:57 pmTake it with a grain of salt, Eagles fans believe their coordinators were pretty overrated. Yep. Might not be another 14-3 year but I don't think they will skip a beat. Sirianni deserves a ton of credit.MJW wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 5:32 pmAgree. Promoting Johnson and Wilson would be a great way to ensure their coordinators don't get poached again.

That d-line that couldnt put Mahomes down - they all are up for money. For the next five years they have big contracts to think about.

Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
The Chiefs couldn't stop it, so the play must go away....
Re: The Official 2023 NFL Off-Season Thread
You're really really not going to like how DCs are going to start to defend it.
Most effective would be to shoot low at the QB. Nobody wants that. There's a reason this was illegal for years.
It was removed in 2005 because it was seen as a superfluous rule. Smashing your very expensive QB was thought of as nuts. Well, Eagles said YOLO and took advantage last year but it's unlikely they'll be able to do so for a second season.
36 of 40 first downs on QB sneaks was nuts and a hell of a clever, though perhaps ungentlemanly, vulnerability Nick Sirianni exposed. Almost results in a chip (ala Sean Payton SB halftime onside kick).
