Not a shock. It'll be interesting to see how long he holds on to that spot.
I think Luke Goedeke will get his chances once the PS games roll around.

I'm actually okay with this for now. As long as he keeps his mouth shut and shakes hands bullshitting with the boys and keeping it light. Its one thing to take coaches at their word and another to see the team for yourself. Successful teams have every member of the brass seeing the same picture.

But yeah anything beyond that I agree.

If Stinnie keeps the job, it’s because the kid wasn’t ready, not because Stinnie is great. I think.

* We’ll miss Gronk most in RZT. I want to feel confident coming out of TC in our ability to deploy packages/personnel to score inside the 10.
We have a lot of red zone options. Our RB corps should be screaming for the ball from the 10.
Agreed. And we've got a gang of viable WR targets in RZT.

Honestly, I'm not terribly convinced that Julio Jones is an inherently poor Red Zone Tight player. He's been victimized by personnel grouping choices.
He played in Dirk's offense which notoriously has trouble in RZT (some of which is QB play of Winston and Ryan). He played in Shanahan's offense that features running the football, horizontal set-dressing shenanigans to get the QB on the boundary and get the TE the football down there. He played with a QB who is exceptional 20 to 20 and has had a lot of clutch play...but he has had problems with ball placement and leverage throws down in Redzone Tight.

He's also had several TD's call back throughout the years that were super close or should have been rung up as 6 (like last year for the Titans he had a few).

Its always been a weird stat to me and has looked like a confluence of circumstance. He's a very good route runner, sneaky with push-offs, challenges and wins at the catch point, and is huge. That should make for a good RZT target.

We'll see. Evans and Godwin aren't coming off the field in RZT because they're both top tier RZT targets. So if they believe in Julio's ability to make plays down there, then we'll see more 11 personnel down there (its not like we've got an abundance of TE talent anymore!).

Since the moment we drafted Wirfs it's been a top tier line and best in franchise history. Some rotating names this time around. But I'm pretty high on the new guys.

That's all fine speculation, but my angle is pretty simple. Until Julio Jones shows dominant ability in the Red Zone I'm going to assume that he, for whatever reason, is not a premier Red Zone target.

Then I'd be shocked if he isn't at least ready to play a limited snap count come week 1.

Edit: Damn cross-thread references.

That's not an assumption at this point. He was even taken off the field in RZ packages late in ATL. It's just not something he's done well in his career.

I know, I also pointed that out in a previous post. I was essentially stating that while Nobody's arguments framing Julio Jones' lack of RZ production as a result of circumstance are both logical and well thought out, the empirical evidence skews so hard that it would be unreasonable to think that the trend is going to change after 12 seasons.

Dread wrote: Wed Jul 27, 2022 9:14 am I'm interested to see how the Left Guard battle settles out once the pads come on. Oline is still our biggest key to success since protecting Brady is really all that matters offensively. If we do that we score 30+ points a game.

Looks/sounds like Stinnie will get the first crack at being LG1, but we didn't trade up into the late 2nd round for that Luke Goedeke guy b/c we didn't think he could be a starter. Then we have Hainsey coming into year 2 as well after having a season to make the transition from RT in college to the interior OL.
Photos and word from someone at camp today had the first team line as Smith, Wells, Jensen, Mason, and Wirfs. Doubtful it stays that way, but we'll see.

I don't think OBP is going to waste this year experimenting with trying to make Julio a red zone weapon. He excels between the 20s moving the chains, turning short passes into longer gains and breaking off long TD plays.

There is way too much that he does extremely well to waste time trying to fix the major flaw in his game. We don't have years to figure that out.

I heard Murphy-Bunting reported at 473 pounds. His press is strong, but receivers are burning him deep.

Targets inside the 10 for Evans and Jones passing target % since the start of Evans's career:
2014 21.7/13.9
2015 19.0/28.0
2016 33.3/12.0
2017 31.0/31.4
2018 17.1/18.4
2019 26.3/25.0
2020 28.6/2.6
2021 20.7/8.8
Outside of 2015 which is an an anomaly, there are four years he wasn't targeted significantly less than Evans. I was thinking it was just the opportunity. However, looking at targets inside the 10 from 2014-2019, Julio has 11 total TDs. That's bad.

I seen where Rashaan Melvin retired a Saint today and I said didnt he used to play for us. To my surprise when I looked him up he did not show as a Buc.

But in a 2014 preseason game there he was making plays for us. He managed an eight year career after not making our team.

He is.

He's also become a much better move blocker in the run game as the years have gone, particularly when we motion him play-side and either run little pin & pull on the edge or Outside Zone (he's gotten pretty damn good at reach blocking edge players and overhang defenders).

I'm not scared of Brate getting a lot of snaps in Redzone Tight.
