I agree, and all the negative qualities that @Snake brings up, ok but maybe those bad traits will allow us to keep him on a reasonable deal as long as he's playing at a decent level. I expect him to be very good once he's a veteran.
We don't have to have all pros at every single position otherwise we would lose most of them.

Most weren't content with Arians and he was building a SB team under our noses.
If anything I'd say bucs fans are so traumatized and use to smashing reset they can't recognize a good thing when it's staring them in the face.

Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
Quite the opposite, if we ever did do a reset it would be welcome.
Our problem has been not knowing when to let go or get better. That Superbowl team wasn't built by Arians. It was built by Brady. He wanted Gronk here, we got Gronk. He wanted Fournette here, we got Fournette. He wanted Shady McCoy, what'd we do? He wanted AB here, you know the rest.
After that happened, what was Arians plan? LETS BRING EVERYBODY BACK AND FORGET TO TRY AND GET BETTER. SCREW THIS DRAFT ALSO, THROW A DART IF YOU FEEL BETTER.
4 years later, bringing the band back didn't work. What remains of 2021 draft class will all be out on the street or somewhere on a league minimum deal. Brady was so fed up he retired and didn't come back until Arians himself "retired".
I recall a stat from the PS that we are the only team with 3 10+ year vets that we drafted on our roster(LVD, Gholston, Evans). Hell, look at our offseason. We went 9-8 but what was our 1 big FA move? Bringing back Jordan Whitehead. What'd we do over the weekend? Bring back Mike Edwards.
This franchise has issues vetting talent and all too often is comfortable going back to known commodities.

Yeah, I’m in lockstep with bootz on this one.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the old board anymore. But many of us were signaling the alarms when they started bringing the band back together.
I understand why this feels counterintuitive to some people. “That roster just won the Super Bowl, why not bring everybody back?” People age. Adjustments are made. One hole in the roster over *here* has a trickle down effect over *there*. It’s a fluid situation. Bringing the band back together felt like a move based on vibes, instead of being shrewd.
I will always give Jason credit for building a pretty good roster before Brady arrived. it was missing the most important piece. Yes, he gets credit for signing Tom Brady. But, the greatest player in NFL history signed with the Buccaneers was passed on by multiple NFL franchises that he was hoping to sign with first. The team wasn’t beholden to Jameis Winston anymore, because Winston turned down an extension a couple years prior. That Licht offered.
It’s been confirmed that Brady and Gronkowski were heading to *Las Vegas* before Gruden fucked it up, in his typical egotistical fashion.
Anyways. I don’t think Jason optimized the roster after the Super Bowl win. He got lucky. you make some of your own luck too. I just don’t see him getting that lucky again.
If he elects to promote the coordinator again, I have very little faith in this team returning to real contention again. Unless Patrick Mahomes decides he wants to be a buccaneer in 15 years.

We could potentially do better than Licht, but we can absolutely do much much worse.
We were the best team in 2021 and only got derailed by obnoxious injuries and a Eff’dup AB. No moves in the off-season would've overcome the injuries and drama.
Fact is, we're in the middle of arguably the most successful era of Bucs football ever. From 2020 we embarrassed the league darling in the SB, back to back to back NFC South titles, 4 consecutive playoff appearances along with 6 playoff wins. Still tons of this season left to play so we could end up adding more success.

Winfield 26, Wirfs 25, Barton 22, Godeke 23, Irving 22, White 25, Tucker 22, Baker (vet leader at 29) Mauch 25, Kancy 23, McCollum 25, Tykee Smith 23, McMillan 22, Klien 24, Diaby 25, Sir Vocea Denis 24, Braswell 23.
2 of our youth movement has a SB ring. And Some of these guys JUST got here.
What exactly do you want to blow up here?
You want to trade Evans and Godwin and Draft 2 recievers? Maybe It really is a plausible idea so that we can fix the defense in the offseason. But i prefer to keep those 2 guiding young recievers we bring in
Vea is 29. You want him gone? Idk about that, he still has a few years left but you better draft his replacement then because that'll leave a huge hole bigger than what Britt leaves in coverage. I personally feel Vea is the perfect guy to keep in helping guide the youth of the line for years to come.
The only thing that should be getting blown up imo is LB minus Diaby and Dennis. LvD retiring and Britt to the PS. CB is another need and the defensive line minus Kancy and Vea.

The only thing I disagree with is that in both of the "Bring back the band" seasons following a Super Bowl, it was injuries and a headcase star receiver melting down that did us in, not because some fault in the roster construction. In year two of Brady, we lost to the eventual champs in the playoffs and arguably got hosed pretty good by the refs.Snake wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 10:19 pm Yeah, I’m in lockstep with bootz on this one.

Otherwise, I can behind a lot of this. Licht generally drafts well but his misses have crippled the defense. It shows in how much we regressed after losing Sirvocea Dennis. We can contend with this offense but the defense needs so many upgrades I am not sure it can be done in one offseason, especially if we have to replace LVD. We would need Licht to hit to more home runs like he did with JPP and Sack Barrett, plus a defensive draft that pays off quick

Think about it this way. While we stood pat with the roster we had, 31 other teams got better, including the Rams who you mentioned. They beat us twice that season and neither game was particularly close. Especially the 1st one.Terry Tate wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:14 amThe only thing I disagree with is that in both of the "Bring back the band" seasons following a Super Bowl, it was injuries and a headcase star receiver melting down that did us in, not because some fault in the roster construction. Let's look at Kansas City. They've won 3 rings in 5 seasons. They don't stand pat with their roster. They traded Tyreek Hill. They released an All-Pro RT. Traded L'Jarius Sneed after they won it all last season. They are constantly evolving and adjusting their roster year to year because they realize being complacent can be a killer. They maximize the value of the players on their roster and strike when the iron is hot to remain in the top spot.
We got complacent. We won our ring and instead of making moves to remain competitive and flexible with the roster and salary cap, we decided to max out the credit card and accept that we'd be in cap hell for a while. We're still in that boat in some respects. Just a few years ago we were competitive with the rest of the league. Now we're struggling to remain competitive with our division. The roster is a big reason why.

Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
KC traded Tyreek Hill as much as Tyreek Hill just wanted to leave. They offered him a contract. He wanted more and wanted a change. KC isn't brilliant for trading him. They had to trade him and it has hurt their offense in the process.
Nobody got complacent here. That's ridiculous. KC has Patrick Mahomes. Tom Brady retired. What was the expectation? Honestly, they've done an incredible freaking job considering. They landed a franchise QB for $8M and parlayed that into another division win and a playoff win when everyone thought they'd be in line for the #1 pick. This year they've lost a couple OT games on the road without touching the ball and needed a couple bounces or calls to go their way and they'd be 8-2. This is a good team that has had some bad breaks and bad game management this year.
The roster is top 10.

That 2021 team was incredible. Much better than 2020. The glaring mistake was drafting Kyle Trask instead of adding a position player as depth.Terry Tate wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:14 amThe only thing I disagree with is that in both of the "Bring back the band" seasons following a Super Bowl, it was injuries and a headcase star receiver melting down that did us in, not because some fault in the roster construction. The 2021 team was identical to the 2020 team except we had a much worse draft in 2021. How was that team “better” when they were the same?

You want to know how much "continuity" matters?
Tom Brady and Gronkowski played 30+ (combined) years for another team, and won a ring their first season someplace else.
The championship winning culture arrived, and promptly left, when the most talented players left. What a coincidence.

2020 team was 11-5. 2nd in the NFC South. 3rd in points on offense. 8th in points on defense.

Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
Yeah, and the fabled bye week adjustments in 2020, made 2020 the tale of two teams. The team went undefeated after week 13. Those changes were maintained into 2021. Where they had an easier schedule.
https://www.pewterreport.com/bucs-brief ... cs-season/Heading into their bye week, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles were at this crossroads. With a 7-5 record, they could remain who they’ve always been, which for Arians has been a lengthy career in the NFL, or implement different concepts and at times even different personnel usage to the Bucs offense and defense heading into a critical stretch of the season.
As most great coaches and teams do, all three men chose to adapt.
For Arians, that process began with some much-needed changes to his offensive approach and design. As I’ve written about at length before, the Bucs transformed their approach to first down, largely because Arians wanted to be “more aggressive.” They went from around a 50-50 run-pass split on first down in neutral situations to around 65-35 pass-run over the final four weeks of the regular season, skyrocketing to one of the best first down teams (third in EPA/play) in the league after spending the first 13 weeks of the season as one of the league’s worst (23rd in EPA/Play).
Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
What a load of crock. How internalized is your self loathing fandom that you literally just dismissed the years of effort of everyone else in the franchise just to dick ride Brady?
Pathetic.

Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
Mauch ranked 22nd on PFF's guard list:
https://www.pewterreport.com/bucs-offen ... -top-list/“Mauch made a monumental leap in his performance this past season. During his rookie campaign in 2023, Mauch ranked 77th out of 83 qualifying guards in PFF grade (43.8). In his second year, his grading profile jumped more than 30 points on the grading scale up to a 74.6, placing him just outside the top-15 highest-graded guards in the NFL.”
Mauch displayed considerable improvement as both a run blocker and as a pass protector. He developed an unspoken rhythm with right tackle Luke Goedeke to become one of the best double teams in the NFL. Mauch’s strike timing improved in his sophomore season and he added muscle and strength to increase his leg drive and ability to create vertical displacement.
And as a pass protector he added improved eye discipline to pick up stunts and twists along with a stronger anchor to his already elite recovery skills. In doing so, he cut his pressures allowed to a third of what they were in 2023. Among qualified guards last year Mauch ranked fifth in the NFL in pressure rate allowed at 2.63%. That aligns closely with his 98.5 efficiency that PFF credits him with which ranked third. His season was so impressive I made the case that he should have been in consideration for postseason honors.
Re: Welcome Cody Mauch
It’s actually crazy how much bad offensive line play there is in the NFL. The starter floor is the basement.
To be expected though. Given the changes in practice rules in college and NFL. Offensive line is a rep rep rep position. And the reps aren’t there.

It's also a reflection on the game at the college level. O-line also needs time to work together and to gel as a unit. Licensing and the transfer portal have made that a lot harder, and a focus on the pass game has hurt their run blocking abilities. Linemen are coming out of college very unpolished compared to other positions. NFL teams can't afford to take the time to coach them up and coach out the bad habits.

Got to thinking, this might explain Licht's preference for o-line players from small schools/division 2. Not as much movement via the transfer portal (not as lucrative for the athletes unless they can step up to Division 1). And they tend to focus on both the run game and the passing game as opposed to primarily the spread formation with an emphasis on passing.Pirate Life wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 5:28 pm

The Big Ten had three times as many 1000 yard rushers than 3000 yard passers last year, a 9:3 ratio if you were curious. The SEC by comparison had a 3:5 ratio of 1k rushers to 3k passers.
The Big 10 has always loved to run the ball, and always will.
