Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
From PS to active roster. I'd say that's on track, yes.
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
I wouldn’t trade a 3rd rounder for a dozen 6 rounder, in the same way I wouldn’t trade a 1st for a half dozen or so 3rd rounders.
Different magnitudes of value. 5ths and 6ths are pennies

Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Sportrac is showing we got Detroit's #73.
edit: Btw, in terms of draft value, the #73 is worth 225, while the 6th round COMP pick we traded for CD3 is worth all of 3.4.....

Spotrac would be wrong. We got the #92 pick, not the pick they got from Minnesota.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 9:27 pm Sportrac is showing we got Detroit's #73.

Except in his case its active roster to PS. Seems to be going backwards.

More room for priority free agents.

Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Tough to lose Davis, we got worse after this deal. But ultimately we were paying Davis and Dean a bunch of money for pretty meh corner play.
Not sure why we’re so sold on Zyon. It was only after Dean got hurt, and Goff started going after Zyon, did Detroit pull away from us….
Hopefully we get something good with that pick.

Yes, it was a procedural move to get him a game check. He wasn't active for the game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today elevated running back Patrick Laird and outside linebacker Jose Ramirez from the practice squad to the active roster for Monday night's Wild Card matchup against Philadelphia.

So yes. He was elevated. As in, upwards.

This was more about shedding payroll than it was about him not being good.

"After the game, Ramirez and Laird will automatically revert to the practice squad without having to pass through waivers." Dzansi and Laird were promoted against Detroit. Ramirez was relegated to the practice squad. He was relegated as in assigned to a lower position. You conveniently left some stuff out.Doctor wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 10:00 pm The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today elevated running back Patrick Laird and outside linebacker Jose Ramirez from the practice squad to the active roster for Monday night's Wild Card matchup against Philadelphia.

Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Back in country for a bit. Friend of mine who is a big Detroit Lions fan texted me about this. Figured I'd C/P the response:
CD3 (not sure what number he'll take there...might be CD24 or CD33!) is one of the best Man Coverage defenders in the league. No questions asked.
* Put him in Press Man or Bump & Run, In-phase, and he's elite.
* Put him in Off Man and he's solid but less good.
* Put him in Off Zone and ask him to Click & Close and he's ok (he's improved dramatically).
* Ask him to play Bail/Out of Phase in like Match Quarters or Cover 3 and he's rather JAG-ish.
The issue on our team is that Coach Bowles has done the same things he's done everywhere. Over time, he's evolved to play overwhelmingly that 3rd and 4th bullet point...same thing he's done everywhere else. The issue is Davis (and Dean to a lesser degree) is excellent at the first two bullet points, but totally replaceable at the latter two. And we're seeing stacked injury concerns. Last 3 years the median # of snaps for the top 30 CBs in snaps in the NFL is a hair under 1000 Snaps per Reg Season. Davis is a hair over 70 % of that. That is a ton of missed snaps.
So you're getting the guy I mention above + a solid, willing tackler and run support player + a player who can diagnose perimeter screens and spill the play to help or make the play.
For us, the injuries + averageness at various Zone responsibilities make him expendable unfortunately (loved the pick, loved the player, but the fit became weird as the scheme evolved away from his skillset). So if you're saying that your Lions are playing a ton of Press and Off Man (I'm only vaguely aware of your scheme tendencies so I'll defer to you), then you got a very good player (possibly elite pending % of Press Man snaps)..but he gets nicked and misses a lot of snaps...so good luck there!
===================
TLDR, I think this was a good move by Licht. Getting a top 100 pick (about 110 draft value) for a 70 % snap playing CB who is increasingly a weird fit + needed salary shed and some cap space - a pair of 6th rounders (maybe 25 draft value) - escalation of dead cap that will have to be distributed = Net Win IMO. And, again, I say this as someone who loved the pick and the player/teammate. Good luck CD3. Might see another Super Bowl with the Lions.

Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
I'm pretty sure he'll still be CD3...
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
But 21 generations from now we might have a CD24
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
I think you would probably be giving Licht stick if he had done the inverse of this trade.
"Giving up a top 100 pick for a guy who was bottom half of the league as a corner and has one year left on his deal? Terrible trade!"

Ken please list the examples of Licht getting three for one trades
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Yeah, it's being pretty well praised online and rightfully so. We turned the 63rd pick into 6 years of good CB play, a SB ring contributor, and the 92nd pick in a great class.
And... you're.... mad....

KC got a 3rd NEXT year for Snead.

Davis and Sneed are both good players, we just cannot make more even deals like that because we have no clout.
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Ha, just noticed KC picked up Matt Araiza.
Re: Carlton Davis traded to Lions
Pretty sure the real "boss" here would be the Titans GM getting a player the caliber of Snead for a 3rd NEXT year and only swapping 7th round picks.

A contrarian take? I am surprised.
A 3rd and the pleasure of paying him a massive contract I’m sure.

The only contrarian take here would be thinking Sneed isn't worth the contract OR a 2025 3rd.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 10:23 am A contrarian take? I am surprised.

Also you need to look up the word contrarian because you clearly used it incorrectly here.

Got more??
We got more?!?!?!!
Both the Bucs and Chiefs received a 3rd for their respective players. The Bucs also GAVE UP 2 6ths while the Chiefs GAVE UP nothing else extra. They actually got a better 7th round pick.

And please don't pretend like you would be happy with what the Chiefs got instead. It's really disingenuous.
We got the better deal given the context of our team heading into 2024.
