Justin Herbert

Post by CannonFire »

My cousin is a Dolphins fan and loves The Phinsider. He said that he read on there, that there are rumors circling around that the Chargers are considering rebuilding (because their only good players are either old AND expensive, or just expensive), and there's not enough of them. Herbert's name came up as a player they're willing to trade in this rumor because they have the #5 pick, and could get multiple #1's for him.

2 questions...

1) Anyone else hear this, since most of you are more in tune with Florida related info?
2) If it's true, I'm thinking 3 #1's would probably be the price... and I'm ok with that.

There are rumors that we could trade for Justin Fields or that the Bills could trade Allen to the Bears for 4 1st.

None of them have any substance outside of people creating discussion points.

edit: There's nothing of substance on this outside of speculation (mostly from Bears fans) that Harbaugh said that JJ would go number 1 overall to Colin Cowherd (in January or something). That appears to be the only legit fuel.

I'd bet good money that every HC candidate for LAC was asked something like this:

"we think Justin Herbert is a hall of fame talent held back by inferior coaching, don't you agree?"

Yeah, the best way to go about rebuilding is to trade a good 25 year old QB. /s

That was my thinking as well. But, my cousin (and brother who avidly follows college football), both said they aren't surprised because they think that Harbaugh loves McCarthy and would absolutely take him at #5 (or move up to do it).

That's what I said. But if Harbaugh wants McCarthy, they now have a 22 year old QB who's going to cost you a ton less money.

It looks like for the next 2 years at least, Herbert will actually be cheaper than a 1st round pick as the signing bonus stays with the team.

I think there's a better chance that Tom Brady is the starting QB for the 49ers next season than Herbert isn't on the Chargers. Obviously both are possible, but extremely unlikely.

His cap hit is 19 and if traded will still count as 13 against the cap next year. A rookie 1st round pick would be 6-7, plus that 13.

Also, I just read Herbert has a full no-trade clause.

edit: Big Cat from Barstool says if Herbert is traded this year the Chargers have a 127mm as a dead cap hit.

He actually said they would be 127mm over the cap if they traded Herbert.

1. How is this in anyway Florida related news? We aren't trading for Herbert. The Dolphins & Jags have their own young QBs to pay and aren't trading for him either.

2. Why is Harbaugh always linked to the QBs he worked with in college?

3. The Chargers can't afford to trade Herbert and they shouldn't. He's talented and very young. Does he have championship potential? Maybe. But you can do much much worse.

It’s fun to talk about stuff. But the chances of Herbert being traded are so astronomically low that I’m not sure if it’s even fun.

Like, Harbaugh would need to walk in on Herbert with his Mrs Harbaugh. Those sort of low chances.

I said this before that if Harbaugh goes back to the NFL he wanted to draft McCarthy. It's been reported for months now

Why would he choose the Chargers if he wants to move off the QB anyway? That is literally the only upside the LA job offered.

On the surface, the Chargers would be stupid to trade Herbert. But after looking at those contract numbers, I could see why they might entertain the idea. I'd love for him to be in Tampa. He's my favorite non-Tampa player. He needs an offensive mind to take him to that next step, something he hasn't had with the Chargers.

You really think he wasn't given the right to do any change he wanted with his coaching success?

That's fine... but then why take the Chargers job? If he did, then he must have been willing to not draft McCarthy. As other's pointed out (and I had the inkling already), there's not financial way to move Herbert for at least 2 to 3 years.

Eventually, a team will take $120 million dead cap hit to move a player. Today is not that day.

No. As we've discussed, they cannot move Herbert this year.

He can't be traded without approving it and they will take too big of a cap hit to field a team.

Are you saying there is no trade market for Herbert? If they trade him this year they only have $13 million in dead money and the new team has him for cheap for two years. I'm not saying it will happen, but it it is doable with ease

Think of how many draft picks he would get from Herbert

According to Sporttrac 2024 Dead Cap: $108,502,700 if traded before June 1. That would be 89mm total cap hit (they wouldn't have to pay this years salary, I think..it says cap saying -89mm) which would put them over the cap by 127mm.

Is it because these would be accelerated? That's the only way you can to get to that math

2024 Option Bonus: $50.6M (guaranteed, due 3/22/2024)
2025 Option Bonus: $45M (guaranteed)

I'm not sure. I first read it from Big Cat quoted on the chargers message board, but all the contract sites say the same. Just click on this year for dead cap hit and they say what the pre/post June 1 cuts and trades would result in for the team.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles ... ert-47599/

If they trade him this year it's 108mm dead cap hit that takes place this season. That makes it impossible.

Harbaugh absolutely took the job knowing it's not financially possible to trade Herbert and that he has a no-trade clause.

Edit: It looks like it's all of his signing bonus and options added up except for the final year (which there's an opt out that year).

That’s what this thread should be about

He’s not going anywhere. Joey Bosa probably is
