That's a difficult question, Bpotz. Good question.

*I used to love Russell Wilson. Maybe he’s not done*

*Yeah, but Baker is much younger and has recent performance on his side. Plus continuity.*

*Continuity is debatable. He will have a new offensive coordinator and he just produced a quality season with no previous continuity. Just how important is continuity?*

*Broncos fans online are discounting Wilson’s statistical performance last season. Saying the film showed a guy who refused to play in scheme, or couldn’t. And looked like an inferior version of his previous self.*

*Yeah, but Wilson when he’s right is the prototypical version of Baker Mayfield. Fantastic deep ball. With better mobility. There could be upside there.*

*Wilson could also be done as an impact player. He is dependent on his mobility and creating looks.*

This is my internal monologue. I am undecided.

https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/advanced-stats-qb.php

Great set of advanced stats for last year. Baker bests him just about everywhere. Baker with significantly more completions at the intermediate levels of the field. 10+ yards and 20+ yards. Slight edge in 30+ yards and 50+. Wilson had one more completion than Baker at 40+ yards.
According to Brett Kollman, Wilson only had 18 total intermediate completions between the numbers in all of 2023 (15 games).
Wilson is 35. Baker is 28. Wilson has now been dumped by 2 teams in 3 years, which has been a negative narrative to denigrate Baker around here since he was signed.

Russell Wilson will likely cost league minimum, Baker Mayfield could cost up to $40mil.

This is the only factor where Russ may beat Baker at this stage of their careers, but if we're going cheap I'd rather just draft someone who isn't a diva.

I also think it's a foregone conclusion that Baker is our QB.

I'd take the diva at league minimum and draft a QB. If the diva gets to be too much to handle or isn't performing, put the rookie in. But there's no pressure or rush to start a rookie with a vet in place.

We like Baker, Baker likes us, and we just resigned his (and everyone else's) amigo Mike Evans.

Best get your oven mitts, because we're gonna be Baking next season.

Last year I would have been on board with Russ. This year? Give me the much younger guy that has led us the playoffs.

Sign Russ to league minimum, tag AWJ, sign Christian Wilkens or Brian Burns. I'm having too much fun.

Nuke the future!

I'd personally rather have the younger player that could potentially be a franchise QBotF. However, I have to admit Russell's price tag is appealing. Maybe it's leverage to bring Baker's asking price down?

Draft the QB of the future. He doesn't have to be forced to play with Russ on the team.

I'm not expecting this to happen in the least, just throwing around ideas and stirring some discussion for fun. It's working, people are engaging. I do think we could use Russell Wilson as leverage to bring Bakers price down some. That's a good point you make and one we should be considering.

I dunno, I think Baker is better FOR THE TEAM than Wilson is. Too many indications that Wilson is a flake, a possible cancer in the locker room. The locker room seems happy now, but I haven't been in it.

You've said he had baggage longer than anyone else here and you're right. This is mind blowing.

But I'd still use him to bridge the gap for a QB in this draft.

If we were to sign Baker, would you still draft a QB in this draft?

If Coen, Bowles, and Licht watch the film, and they think it’s anything close to a tossup, you gotta go with Wilson. Provided Wilson wants to play in scheme.

$25m a year vs $1.2m

Because of the long term commitment necessary and the money, I'd do so much later in the draft. Day 3.

It's all about the money for me. If it's going to cost 3 for 90 to keep Mayfield, I'd rather sign Wilson, because I could probably get him for a deal like 3 for 90 as well, with Denver picking up the first 39 of that, so I'm only on the hook for 51... and that's over the last 2 years. Also, I could probably get that deal where only Y2 is guaranteed, giving me an out after Y2 and in total. At that point, I'd only pay Wilson something like 26 for 2 years worth of work. In that scenario, I'd rank them...

1. Wilson
2. Someone else
3. Mayfield

If I need to give Wilson 3 for 90 AFTER this season with more guaranteed (similar to what is being thrown around as the numbers to bring back Mayfield), I'd rank them...
1. Someone else
2. Mayfield
3. Wilson

If I can get Mayfield back on a 3 for 60 deal, with only 30 guaranteed, I'd rank them...
1. Mayfield
2. Someone else
3. Wilson

On field play isn't the only factor when evaluating a QB.

Saving a little money but losing the locker room in the process seems counter productive.

I'd stay away from Wilson. He seems to be a self-centered guy when it comes to the team he's on.
