Buccaneers are releasing two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett, per sources.
Barrett had a $15.04 million option bonus due next month. Instead of collecting it, he now will become a free agent.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Well, there goes about $13M from our cap space. He was going to be around a $14M cap hit, now he's going to be around $27M.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
It’s more about the question of “is he worth what we’d actually have to pay him if he’s on the roster?” than it is about any dead money. Answer is a resounding no.
Now they can take Shaq’s $$ and spend it elsewhere.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Definitely not a numbers guru, but I swear the cap savings for cutting him this year are minimal, but releasing him next would've been more ideal.
Don't understand this one.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
From Pewter Report “The Bucs do not owe Barrett any guaranteed cash at this point in his contract, but due to prorated bonuses, they are on the hook for $17,401,000 in dead cap charges that still need to be accounted for.
Pewter Report is reporting that they will be designating his release as a post-June 1st move which means they are allowed to incur those charges over two seasons.
In 2024 they will take on a salary cap charge of $9,267,000 and defer $8,134,000 to 2025. Barrett was due to have a salary cap charge of $14,190,882 if he remained on the roster in 2024 so once the calendar turns to June 2nd, they will net $4,923,882 in savings. For 2025, they will incur a dead cap hit of $17,401,000.”
So basically saves 5 mil in cap space this year.
I appreciate Shaq for his time here, but he wasn’t the same player this past year post Achilles injury (or really even before the injury). Wish him the best and I’m sure he’ll land somewhere.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Meet the new dead cap. Same as the old dead cap.
Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Yep. This is the ugly side of all those void years. You'll be hard pressed to find a Bucs player on a 2nd contract that doesn't have them on his deal.Kona wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 8:34 am From Pewter Report “The Bucs do not owe Barrett any guaranteed cash at this point in his contract, but due to prorated bonuses, they are on the hook for $17,401,000 in dead cap charges that still need to be accounted for.

What's hilarious to me is he got the ax before Russell Gage.

He has a roster bonus of $15mil due next month that I'll guess had something to do with it.IchabodCrane84 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:49 am Definitely not a numbers guru, but I swear the cap savings for cutting him this year are minimal, but releasing him next would've been more ideal.

I have no idea why anyone is questioning this move. He can't do what his contract is paying him for, they can save a bit on the cap this season and move some of the money to next year's cap which is likely to be higher than this year's cap.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Shaq may not have gotten many sacks, but of all our edge personnel, he was the most reliable difference maker. Diaby's production was feast, famine or fluke. JTS and Nelson were mostly famine. I understand why this needed to be done. But Shaq was still the best player at his position on this roster.
I will continue holding out hope that Chargers part ways with Khalil Mack because of the deep cap hell they are in and we somehow can bring him in.

He will be a June 1st cut per many reports. Stop with the fear mongering. This will save us $3,382,353 this yearCannonFire wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:42 am Well, there goes about $13M from our cap space. He was going to be around a $14M cap hit, now he's going to be around $27M.

I love Shaq Barrett and appreciate what he did for this team, but I think this was a smart move. He ain't what he was, just like JPP before him. I wish him success in all his future endeavors.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Yea @Kona already broke it down for everyone. End of the day we save a shade under $5mil and those dead cap hits get spread out over this offense and next year's.kaimaru wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 2:18 pmHe will be a June 1st cut per many reports. Johnny Wilson can be had in round 3. Big tall guy with an enormous wingspan who can easily catch jump balls. Plus he's taller than Evans.Bootz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 12:32 pmAnd a WR to make up for Evans.BuccaNOLEer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 12:17 pm

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
I wonder if we are going to target a FA edge rusher. There are some studs to be had, even without Mack on the market
Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Not sure why a lot of people are sooo high on Mack.Jonny wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 1:45 pm Shaq may not have gotten many sacks, but of all our edge personnel, he was the most reliable difference maker. Since 2019 (when Shaq joined TB), Mack has 48.5 sacks while Shaq has 45. Yes, Mack had a great 2023, but i think that's the final burn on that candle.
Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
When it comes to NFL performance, I’d put 100% weight on things that happened last year, 50-60% weight on things that’s happened 2 years ago (injuries and such can happen), and about 0% weight on things that occurred 3+ years ago.
Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Everyone would. @acmillis included. No other reason why he'd make it a 5 year window to make that assessment. Jameis Winston was our QB when his window starts.

Re: Shaq Barrett: Released
Now it completely makes sense why people want to give Baker a ton of money.
Hey, he had a good year last year!
Yeah, but the rest of his career is pretty bad.

After reading other posts, I didn't realize that the Bucs were going to do some fancy pants cap gymnastics, creating more future dead cap money.Four Verticals wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 12:19 pmExcept that it will be $9mil+.
