Introducing the USXFL

The USFL and the XFL are in talks to merge in time for the 2024 season and from what I'm hearing the sides are very close to a deal and it could be announced any day. I wonder what that will mean for the teams and the rules?

I'll bet it was the USFL and having all the games in Birmingham, I'm not one bit surprised. While Delaware, Ohio may be extreme, they need to be in mid market cities that don't have NFL teams. Here's some good locations for the sixteen teams:

No way. It was put together all wrong. They have three teams in Texas, none in Florida or California. All the games are being played in Birmingham or Canton. And they aren't really advertising for it like they were the AAF or the 2020 XFL.

This UFL league is destined to fail and there will be no more spring football after that. The AAF had a lot of good stuff going for it. Allowing one guy to take over league ownership and then him pulling the funding killed it.

California is irrelevant. They've made it known that they don't want football... outside of NCAA.

According to this ESPN article, every team is playing in their own stadium.

The problem they have is that every player is a former college player/current NFL bust. There's no upside or intrigue to watch the game. There's an outside shot that about 1 or 2 of these guys per team, catches on to NFL roster... for a few weeks, but that's it. There are only 2 ways a league like this can get traction...

1) They actually become a minor league for the NFL just like MLB does... sort of. No, they're not going to draft players and they start their career in the UFL, they sign 50+ undrafted free agents and the ones that don't make the team, go to that teams' UFL team. The league can start a week or 2 after the Super Bowl and run until OTA's. Make broadcasting and marketing a part of the NFL package. Each team can play in their current teams' NFL stadium.

2) Keeping with the current format, they need to steal college recruits. Target the Cam Ward's and Arch Manning's of the world. Instead of going to a low level school and hoping you develop to a point where a bigger university hopefully comes along and find's you, go and get paid in the UFL. Instead of sitting behind an established starter for 2 years, get paid in the UFL.

In order for this to work, the UFL needs to get the recruits before the colleges do. Is that possible? I think it's more likely than people think, though I don't think it's easy. I think they could sell a lot more kids than people think, on the idea that they aren't going to be forced to go to a classroom. Will there be enough? I don't know. What I do know is that this has a better shot at working out than what they're doing now. People who follow college football mainly watch to see how good the kids are and going to be. People who follow the NFL, follow it because these are the best of the best. No one watches the UFL because, as stated earlier, the players are nobody's.

I agree with you that a single owner funding this on the cheap, hoping it pans out, won't work. Even with individual owners, the way it's operating, won't work either. The only way this league has legs is individual owners with plundering the high school ranks and stealing college recruits, because they're not going to steal NFL prospects. Well, I guess they could if they decided to draft kids 1-yr removed from HS instead of 3, like the NFL. That way, they could draft the freshman phenoms or sophomores who don't want to wait another year. Leave school a year early and get paid. Chances are their NIL contracts will stick.
