Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Light skinned Scotty Miller
Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
So this is our return guy.
All I need to know is he was a 5 star prospect who couldn't get on the field at LSU, who pumps out great WR after great WR.
Yah.....

Most hated man in America.

Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Strengths
Raw but has moldable traits.
Set Nebraska single-game record with 237 receiving yards versus Purdue.
High school sprint champ with clear second gear to separate.
Shows good fight battling against clingy press coverage.
Change of pace at route stems can leave coverage in the mud.
Explosive leaping to grab catches at the high point.
Returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns during his time at LSU.
Weaknesses
Gets by with athleticism over craftsmanship.
Fast but gives coverages too many breaks with lackadaisical routes.
Drifts into the top of the route, allowing defender to close him out.
Loses catch focus when he hears footsteps closing in.
Needs to do a better job of finding soft spots in the zone.
Below average stacking corners on deep throws.
Too indecisive getting upfield on gadget plays and screens.

Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Seems like a good guy to take a flyer on. I agree they gave too much to move up.
Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Weaknesses all seem coachable.
Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
He's not Scotty Miller. Scott Miller was a build-up speed guy without a ton of wiggle in his game.
Palmer is a guy you manufacture touches for. Screens, slants, smoke routes, jet sweeps, gadget plays. He's electric with the ball in his hands. A threat to go 75.
That said, the downfield receiver elements to his game are raw at this point, and he's never going to have elite play strength. He's skinny and he plays skinny. He can be bodied at the line. He's not going to outmuscle anyone for a 50/50 ball.
He's the kind of guy a creative OC would love, but he's also unlikely to provide starting depth with his skill set.

His weaknesses are coachable. Speed is not. You can't teach speed, either you have it or you don't. You could get him on the field on obvious passing downs and have him run the go route all day to take the top off the defense.MJW wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2023 5:57 pm He's not Scotty Miller. Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
It's the 6th round so I guess you take 4.33 speed. Looking at his film and testing he's basically straight line speed. Testing extremely poorly for agility, 3 cone etc. If you're a DB you aren't falling for route that isn't vertical.
I guess the question will be how much can we rely on Evans, Godwin and Gage staying healthy. Probably not much. You don't want a guy in your top 3 snaps who can only run go routes. I see this guy being a 4th WR only.
I would've probably taken A.T Perry. Bigger more well rounded WR who can be a top 3 guy on a team. Which means he could've been a longer term replacement for any of our top guys if needed.
But I understand why they went speed. We will see.

Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
He's made his money working from the slot.
That's Godwin's turf.
Leftwich liked to put Godwin in the slot to run screens and skinny posts. I wonder if Canales is going to put our number 2 back at the Y spot where he was prior to AB and where Koetter had him.

Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Canales has already spoken about liking Godwin back on the outside. Though I'm sure both top 2 will get plenty of slot plays.

Kick returner. I doubt we see him much outside of that.
Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Kid has a massive Drop problem. 12.3 % of Targets dropped in 2022. This would put him 87 out of 88 for the worst Drop Rate of WR in the NFL with at least 30 Targets last year. If that manifests at all in the NFL? That is disqualifying IMO. Cut-worthy.
Contested Catch Rate was a brutal 30.8 %; one of the worst in FBS for qualifiers. And yes, there are loads of small receivers who are at least Catch-Point-competitive if not dominant.
However, he does Force Missed Tackles. 13 MTF or # 15 for qualifiers in FBS last year (which is also about the same as MTF/Target or MTF/Rec). And he can get deep when route running isn't the means for the win.
This is not a slick route-runner. He's not going to win by dominating across the tree. This is not a catch-point player. You're looking at 2 x tricks (9/Post/Skinny Post + Smoke Routes/Tunnel or Bubble Screens) and hope the dropsies don't materialize as bad as they did in FBS.
Sub-package, low & sitch-specific-touch player that may given some KR help (not that KR matters much in the modern NFL) if he isn't shy about ST contact (totally TBD).

Re: Welcome Trey Palmer - WR - Nebraska
Thanks for posting that, Graham. That was a good read. Palmer must've spent all offseason working on his route running and hands because he's now second on the depth chart. If he rounds out those two elements of his game, he is going to be dangerous.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:45 am Randy Moss on Trey Palmer:
