@MJW From my understanding you love scouting Olineman? What do you think about Dawand Jones? Absolute Mammoth of a human being at 6'8" 360 lbs with an 89" wingspan.

In the event we move Wirfs to LT... Jones could be a nasty replacement.

This supposes that we have a roster built to contend, which is a debatable point.

I think it's a relative certainty that we finish up the draft with a rookie quarterback; the question for me at least then becomes which guy do you like best. Hooker could be a decent midround pick, but that goofy-ass Tennessee offense tweaked his stats and reads imo, so one wonders if his pro play would be closer to his Virginia Tech days than what he did for the Vols.

I watched a wee bit of tape on the guy and said "balls gotta come out quicker".

He's Stafford like.

Watch a Hendon Hooker highlight reel.

Count how many NFL type tight window completions you see.
Then add how many of Hooker's highlights are actually his, and not the receiver cleaning up for him or getting wiiiiide open.
From that number, subtract the number of times you see him underthrow a wide-open receiver, who's still open enough to come back and make the catch.

At the end, you'll have a negative number.

That's where I'm at with Hendon Hooker.
"So let's get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I got to go..."

I’d be tempted to just hammer OL if it falls that way for us. Give White and Trask a chance. Worst case our 2024 rookie QB will have a great young OL to play behind. It helps now and later.

I’m really liking Anton Harrison at LT to replace Donovan Smith. Every mock I do he’s there, late first kinda guy.

I really want Bijan Robinson. Imagine this offense with Evans, Godwin, Robinson, White.

Check down city with a serious run threat and WRs that can threaten any level of the field.

That puts us in a similar position to SF where we could get away with a QB who isn’t a superstar.

That offense would be insane with the right play calling.

Do not want RB in round 1. If we have an OLine that can block, I can run behind it. If we have Sweetness and no OLine, it doesn't matter.

Why would we have "no OL for Bijan to run behind"?
Because we didn't use our 2023 first rounder on an OL?
Are there no other rounds, no other free agents, no other SEASONS?

Even if we fail to fix the OL this year, we can't fix it in 2024? 2025? 2026? 2027? Any of the five years where we have an elite RB on the cheap?

We had a historically bad rushing offense last year. I know you love Bijan (all RBs, really), but taking him (or any RB in the first round, ever) is a complete misallocation of resources.

Let's take a look at the last dozen or so years' worth of first round RBs taken to see if it is worth it (only doing 12 years for time purposes, but the principle goes on infinitely).

2010 - CJ Spiller, Ryan Matthews, Jahvid Best
2011 - Mark Ingram
2012 - Trent Richardson, Doug Martin, David Wilson (lol...who??)
2013 - None
2014 - None
2015 - Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon
2016 - Ezekiel Elliott
2017 - Leonard Fournette, Christian McCaffrey,
2018 - Saquon Barkley, Rashaad Penny, Sony Michel
2019 - Josh Jacobs
2020 - Clyde Edwards-Helaire
2021 - Najee Harris, Travis Etienne

19 total RBs taken in a 12 year span. How many of their teams that drafted them look back and say, "damn, I should not have drafted a RB there, no matter how great of a prospect they were"
I mean, I guess Gurley, Zeke, CMC you could make an argument for, but any of the others? 3/19 is horrible, even for the "throw a dart" NFL draft.

Exactly. I'm not a huge fan of a first round RB... but this guy is being touted as a superior talent to Zeke/Saquon/Gurley. To get that kind of talent at 19 would be a steal. White + Robinson would be a serious threat for years to come.

The only names listed here that were rated close to as highly as Robinson is on this list:
Trent Richardson
Todd Gurley
Ezekiel Elliott
Leonard Fournette
Saquon Barkley

That's an 80% hit rate on landing a completer bellcow stud RB.

It's not the point you were trying to make, but your data makes a case for taking Robinson.

Mind you these guys all went top 5. To get one at 19??

These are the dudes that led the league in rushing average in 2022:

Khalil Herbert (6th Round)
Aaron Jones (5th)
Tony Pollard (4th)...kinda goes against your Zeke argument, no?
Etienne (1st)
Chubb (2nd)
Stevenson (4th)
Allgeier (5th)
Mostert (UNDRAFTED)
Sanders (2nd)
Jeff Wilson Jr. (UNDRAFTED)

So...based on the actual data/facts, you're more likely to find a stud UNDRAFTED than you are in the first round.

I consider every rb but Richardson to be a hit, but i'll toss you Fournette and call it 60% hit rate on generational rbs taken in top 5.

Zeke/Gurley/Barkley all definitely hit. Zeke is obvious. Gurley was the top RB before his knee died. Saquon is dominant when healthy.
Fournette on the cusp. Hasn't been dominant but still has done some serious good in his time.
Richardson bust.

I'd actually be curious how the "generational prospect" RB hit % compares to other positions.
Or, more importantly, what is the % chance of drafting a bust at 19 and how would that compare to the 60% chance of hitting on Robinson at 19.

It's because there's a legitimate argument of how an elite RB impacts the overall team success vs. a replacement or the shelf life of a RB is shorter than most positions.

This wasn't created in the Buccaneer message board, it first started with NFL teams and then draft talking heads pushed it.

RB and off-ball LB have the same battle, but obviously there are some that teams fall in love with and draft regardless.

I think it's common sense to say that spending a draft pick on an elite RB with our o-line isn't the best move for the team and pushing fixing the line to 24,25,26,27 is a terrible argument with the shelf life/prime/cliff that RBs consistently see.

The "you don't take a RB in the top X" is a little too generalized because it depends on the other talent on the board.

If Barry Sanders is there in the 2013 draft, it's hard to be like "Let's take Warmack first because he's on the line"...people will, but it's a bad take, but positions do contribute to prospect ranking for NFL teams.

This should make everybody puke...through 5 seasons, Saquon and Doug Martin are essentially the same player.

Martin had 22 (total) less Rush yards, but averaged 4.87/carry compared to Barkley's 4.5. If Barkley was a , "hit", than Martin must have been as well....that ain't right.
