To no one’s surprise
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft thread***
Stroud showed some stuff in the CFP semi-final that he's never shown before. Some scrambling ability, for one. He has the "prototypical" size compared to Young. Now that pandora's box is opened on that subject - Kyler Murray taken #1 overall - I don't think it matters as much. but it still matters to many GMs.
Young is very interesting. I don't think going to the combine would help his case. I wouldn't test or measure, if I were him. He's smaller than Kyler. He's pretty light, too. Maybe show up for team interviews and wear shoe lifts.
Young's ability to manipulate the defense with his legs, intentionally, to create windows and opportunities really stood out to me when watching him at Bama. He has the defense on a string.
Lots more to the position though. I'll look for some scouting reports.

Should the Bucs trade up for CJ Stroud? Yay or nay?
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
You never know.. How can you be so sure, anything can happen
i believe the Colts will draft him at 5-6 or trade up
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
If CJ Stroud declares, I predict that there will be 2-3 teams trade up into top 5 to take him
Raiders, Panthers and Bucs (why not?)

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Best guess, he doesn't get past the Seahawks at #2 or #3.

Colts need a quarterback obviously
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
I didn’t say I was sure of anything. I just said it’s a very aggressive move for a prospect.

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
If we're sitting there at the mid 20s and Anthony Richardson is still on the board, why isn't Licht drafting him?
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Because we have a second round QB on the roster who has yet to step on the field.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Thu Jan 05, 2023 5:16 am If we're sitting there at the mid 20s and Anthony Richardson is still on the board, why isn't Licht drafting him?
...and Richardson is complete garbage.
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Watch Anthony Richardson play a football game, not just highlights, then tell me if you still think he's a first round talent.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Thu Jan 05, 2023 5:16 am If we're sitting there at the mid 20s and Anthony Richardson is still on the board, why isn't Licht drafting him?

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
MDB nailed it.
You're drafting Richardson because you're seeing those highlights - that CEILING - and believing you can make that ceiling the norm.
Usually, it doesn't work out that way, as we Bucs fans know from our last two first round quarterbacks. But here's an exercise - watch Josh Allen's Wyoming game tape. Not just the highlights. And you'll see roughly as many bad snaps as Richardson. So it CAN work out. TBH, I do not know enough about Richardson's dedication or the quality of his current coaching to say whether he's going to be a Josh Allen or an EJ Manuel.

Kinda looks like a "hope he will do it draft".
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Ten Guys I Really Like Right Now (who maybe won't be long gone for us:)
EDGE Jared Verse, FSU. Probably my most optimistic inclusion, as I think he works out really well. But the depth of edge rushers towards the top of this draft maybe gets him to 18th? I hope? A better prospect than Jermaine Johnson II last year, especially for a 3-4.
TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame. My second most optimistic inclusion. A complete, three down tight end who offers talent as a weapon, as a red zone threat, and he can be an in-line blocker. He may be available simply because he's not one of those H-Back 4.39 no-block types.
OTB Linebacker Trenton Simpson, Clemson. Simpson, eh? I love this kid's game. NFL Pro Bowler all day long. Rangy and fast, great length, aggressive, and instinctive. My one concern is he's a little more high-cut than you'd like so he might be prone to lower-body injuries and trouble disengaging. But with his speed and instincts, good luck getting blockers on him.
OT Broderick Jones, Georgia. He put together some great tape at left tackle this season, but some might prefer him as a guard because of so-so length. Either way he's a fixture with a sky-high ceiling.
OTB Linebacker Noah Sewell, Oregon. A completely different prospect from Simpson. A goddamn hammer with the instincts to play three downs despite his size. This projection is probably a little rich right now, but if he runs better than expected, he should be in this conversation. Just watch him play.
DB Brian Branch, Alabama. He can play any safety role or move up and cover the slot. He's small for a safety, but so is AWJR, who he'd compliment so well.
CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon. My favorite in this corner group. Long, sticky, and fast (TWSS). Hopefully we keep Jamel Dean, which would mean our corner group is something to build around during the coming darkness. I like the other top corners fine also, but Gonzalez plays like a Bowles DB.
WR Jaxson-Smith Njigba, Ohio State. Any chance he's there at 18 if he doesn't get hurt? No. If we were drafting for 2023, he might not be the receiver we target - he's not the afterburner type we need right now. But honestly, he reminds me more of Marvin Harrison coming out of college than Marvin Harrison's son does at this point. Just that body control, the hands, and the IQ.
WR Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee. THIS GUY, on the other hand...he's got a rocket in his pocket ("you don't have to tell me, sir" - another Simpsons nod.) He might be the guy who helps the offense the most in 2023, and hey, it's not like he'd have to retire after the season.
OT Anton Harrison, Oklahoma. I see the size, athleticism, traits, and tape of a long-term NFL starting left tackle. Christian Darrisow is a good comp, and he's been a good pro.

The Bears need to be doing everything they can to get out of that #1 pick.
They are talent thin everywhere and could use the extra draft capital.

Who are the best moving back (coverage) moving forward (tackling) linebackers in this class?
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
@MJW good list. That little Simpson nod gave me a nice laugh
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Bears will trade that pick for a haul to the Colts and Young will torment that Texans for the next decade. Nice little F you by Lovie there to ownership

You angry, happy, or meh if we trade up to say 7 or 8 to draft someone like CJ Stroud?
Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Kyler Murray opened the “Overton window” for players that teams would be willing to draft number one overall.
Bryce Young is going to put that to the test. He will make Mayfield look tall and thick.

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
This is true, though I think Russell Wilson is why Murray got to that place.
I was very anti-Murray in that draft because nobody with his size, with the exception of 10 minutes of Doug Flutie, had been successful in the NFL.
I wouldn't call Kyler a giant success - perhaps, a qualified success. And he's had his trouble with injuries - 9 games missed in the last 2 years. But I don't think Young's size is going to stop anyone from picking him.

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
The game is so different now. I used to look for the best JUGS machine - the guy who could stand tall in the pocket, oblivious to the chaos around him, and throw lasers.
Now? I ask myself, "Who would be the best point guard?" Moving laterally, making quick decisions, getting the ball where it needs to be, keeping his cool when pressed, etc.
I see a lot of that in Young. More in Caleb Williams, but enough in Young that I'd feel good about hitching the wagon to him.

Re: ***Official 2023 NFL Draft Thread***
Is college pressure and pro pressure the same? Which level will need the sharper mind?
It's possible pick six's will be popular again soon, league wide.
